Griffins Sweep Doubleheader from Chargers

The Chestnut Hill College baseball team, for only the third time in program history, swept a doubleheader from conference rival Dominican University on Sunday, beating the Chargers 6-4 and 7-0 Sunday afternoon at Hostelley Field in north Wales, Pennsylvania.

The sweep of the Chargers by the Griffins was the first such sweep since the 2021 season when the Griffins took both games in Orangeburg, new York sand the first sweep at home since the 2018 season when the Griffins won 12-11 and 9-6 at their former home field Latshaw-McCarthy Field in Norristown, Pa.  The 7-0 win in game two on Sunday also marks the program's first shutout at home against the Chargers since the 2014 season.

The Griffins improve to 13-26 overall and 9-13 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games.  The Chargers fall to 14-28 overall and 8-12 in league play.

R.J. Huth was the star of the series, getting four hits in six at-bats in the two games, with a double, a sacrifice fly, a hit by pitch and three stolen bases.  Michael Pascoe had three hits and drove in four runs, three of them coming on a triple in game two.  He also pitched five solid innings to earn his first collegiate win, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out four.

Dylan Broderick, who was the winning pitcher a game earlier in the first game against Goldey-Beacom while hitting a home run in his first collegiate a-bat in the second, added another home run in game two and a single in game one, giving the freshman hits in each of his first three games as a position player (third base).

Phoenix Bowman had a home run in the first game and added a double in the second.  Shawn LeVan had two hits in two official at-bats with an RBI and also drew four walks I the two games.

Colby Seelig (1-2) picked up the win in relief in game two, pitching 4.1 shutout innings while striking out four and allowing just four hits.

In game two, the Griffins jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning.  Aiden Myers doubled to score Huth who opened the inning with a single and a steal of second.  Two batters later, Myer's scored on Geiger's infield groundout.

Bowman doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch in the second inning.  LeVan then drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on an errant throw by the Dominican pitcher on a failed pickoff attempt allowing bowman to score.    Two hit batters loaded the bases with one out before Pascoe delivered a two-out triple into centerfield, clearing the bases and making the score 6-0.

Broderick hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 7-0 and round out the scoring.

In the opener, the Griffins struck first with Huth leading off with a double in the first inning and later scoring on Pascoe's RBI single.

The Chargers tied it on a home run by Jake Chaisongkram in the second inning before the Griffins broke the tie with two runs in the bottom half of the inning.  John Crane singled and Bowman walked to start the inning.  Levan drew a one-out walk to load the bases before Angus Moore drilled a single through the left side to plate Crane.  Huth then launched a sacrifice fly to score Bowman for a 3-1 lead.

Justin Geiger had a one out single in the third and Crane followed with a ground rule double to right center field.  Bowman then singled to score Geiger and two batters later LeVan singled to score Crane, upping the Griffins lead to 5-2.

A two-run triple in the top half of the fifth pulled the Chargers within one, 5-4.  Bowman blasted his home run in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 6-4.

Marlon Rose came in in the sixth inning and gave up a single and then retired the side in order in the seventh to earn his third save of the season.

The Griffins baseball team returns to action on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, when they host Bloomsburg University for a single game at Hostelley Field.  First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
