The Chestnut Hill College Baseball team dropped a home doubleheader Saturday afternoon to area rival Jefferson University as the Rams scored 15 runs in the final three innings to beat the Griffins 2309 in the opener and followed that with a 16-3 win in game 2 at Hostelley field.
The Griffins fall to 9-20 overall and 3-8 in Central Atlantic collegiate conference games. The Rams improve to 16-10 overall.
The first game was also the play-in game for the Bill Giles Invitational with the winner playing either Wilmington or West Chester on April 10 at Citizen's Bank Park.
Alex Fascia, Calvin McCall and
Shawn Levan all hit home runs for the Griffins in the opener. Levan along with
Justin Geiger had two hits apiece while
Phoenix Bowman had a triple and also drove in three runs.
Brendan Long took the loss for the griffins, giving up six runs on five hits while striking out five and walking five.
Chestnut Hill jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the first following a bases loaded walk to Fascia and bowman's three-run triple. The Rams scored twice in the third to pull within one 4-3 before Levan blasted a solo home run in the fourth to make the score 5-3.
Jefferson took the lead with a three-run fifth inning and added two more runs in the sixth to lead 8-5. Fascia led off the bottom of the sixth with a home run to pull CHC within two 8-6. The Rams exploded for eight runs in the top half of the seventh inning with two three run home runs (Marquise Wood and Justin Espinal) as the key hits to take a commanding 16-6 lead.Â
McCall's home run in the eighth made the score 17-8 but the Rams again went to the long ball with Josh Lopez hitting a grand slam in the ninth. Geiger had an RBI single in the ninth to round out the scoring.
In game two, Jefferson scored eight unearned runs in the first inning and never looked back as they cruised to a 16-3 win. Five different players combined for six hits for Chestnut Hill.
Dylan Broderick took the loss, allowing ten runs (just two earned) while striking out four over 3.1 innings.
Three Griffin errors in the first inning along with a grand slam home run by TJU's Justin Egner staked the visitors to an 8-0 lead. RJ Huth had an RBI single in the second before the Rams scored four times in the fourth and four more times in the sixth to pull ahead 16-1. The Griffins drew two bases loaded walks in the seventh to score two more runs and round out the scoring.
The baseball team returns to action on Sunday, April 7, 2024, when they travel to face Caldwell university in a CACC crossover doubleheader at the Kiwanis Oval in Caldwell, New Jersey. First pitch is set for noon.
