Griffins Drop Two Matches at First Day of IUP Crimson Hawk Classic

The Chestnut Hill College Women's Volleyball team traveled to the IUO Crimson Hawk Classic for the first two of their four matches at the tournament on Friday, taking on two solid Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference teams, University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown and host Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Indian, Pennsylvania.

The two PSAC foes were indeed tough opponents for the Griffins as UPJ and IUP both scored 3-0 wins over Chestnut Hill.   Pitt-Johnson swept all three sets with scores of 25-15, 25-18 and 25-20.  The IUP match was a bit closer with the host Crimson Hawks winning 25-18, 25-19 and 25-20.

The Griffins fall to 1-3 overall UPJ improves to 9-0 while IUP improves to 9-2.

Rachel Mace led the Griffins in the opening match, recording 13 kills.  Mia Caporellie had 26 assists setting the CHC offense while Angela April added two aces.

Alexandra Crespin had ten digs to pace the Griffin defense with Erika Dubosky and Mace adding seven apiece.  April had three blocks.

As a team UPJ had a solid attack, hitting .353 (46 kills 10 errors, 102 attempts) while the griffins hit .122 (28-16-98).  UPJ held a 9-5 advantage in aces and a 47-39 advantage in digs.  The Griffins had a 5-4 team block advantage.

In the second game against the host Crimson Hawks, Cha'kya Johnson led CHC with eight kills with Dubosky adding seven.  Caporellie again had 26 assists setting the CHC offense.  Crespin recorded two aces.

Dubosky and Mace had 13 and 11 digs respectively.  Johnson and April had six blocks apiece.

For the match, IUP hit .245 (39-15-98) while the Griffins hit .130 (33-19, 108).  The crimson Hawks held a 9-3 advantage in aces and a 50-39 advantage in digs.   The Griffins had an 8-6 advantage in blocks.

Play resumes at the IUP Crimson Hawk Classic on Saturday, September 21 with the griffins facing Elizabeth City State University at 9 a.m. and Shepherd university at 5 p.m.
