Griffins Defeat Bears for Fourth Straight Win

The Chestnut Hill College Women's Volleyball team won their fourth straight match, defeating Kutztown University 3-1 Wednesday night at Sorgenti Arena.

The Griffins improve to 5-3 overall with the win.  The Bears fall to 0-12 on the season.

Chestnut Hill won a hard fought first set 26-24 before the Bears evened the match with a 25-23 second set win.  The Griffins dominated in the third set 25-5 and never trailed in the final set as they won the match with a 25-23 effort in the final set.

Erika Dubosky led all players with 14 kills, hitting .194 (14-7-36) while Cha'kya Johnson added 13 with a .423 attack percentage (13-2-26).  Angela April also had a solid attack percentage, hitting .400 with 11 kills (11-3-20).

Mia Caporellie set the offense with 42 assists.  Alexandra Crespin and Caroline Croteau added five assists apiece.  Caporellie also led the team with four service aces.

On the defensive side, Rachel Mace led the team with 19 digs while Crespin added 17.  Dubosky chipped in 13 to record her fourth consecutive double-double.  Maya Hopson had three blocks on the night with April and Johnson adding two apiece.

In the opening set, the Griffins built an early four point lead before the Bears rallied with a 9-3 run to reclaim the advantage 17-15. Kutztown increased their lead to 22-19 before the Griffins ran off four straight points with kills from Dubosky and Johnson and two attack errors from the Bears to lead 23-22.  Kutztown tied the game up twice before Pamela Uceta's kill gave the Griffins a 25-24 lead.  A KU attack error followed, and the Griffins had an early 1-0 advantage winning the first set 26-24.

Kutztown never trailed in the second set, but the Griffins did force four ties, the last on an ace from April to even the score at 22-22 before two KU kills and a Griffins' service error gave the Bears the set 25-23.

Chestnut Hill came out dominating the third set scoring the first six points with Caporellie serving before the Bears got on the board. The Griffins then reeled off 13 straight points with Mace serving to hold a 19-1 advantage as they cruised to a 25-5 win and took a 2-1 lead in the match.  Chestnut Hill did not have an attack error in the set, hitting .632 (12 kills in 19 attempts).

The Griffins used a 9-1 run to break a 5-5 tie in the fourth set to take a 14-6 lead, getting five kills from four different players and a pair of aces from Dubosky to fuel the run. Chestnut Hill still led by eight 23-15 when the bears produced an 8-1 run to close within one 24-23 forcing a Griffins timeout.  Out of the timeout, the Bears Saige Thibodeaux served into the net to give the Griffins the point and the set, 25-23 and the match 3-1.

Sarah Hess had 11 kills to lead Kutztown.  Thibodeaux and Lexi McLanahan had 12 digs apiece.

The women's volleyball team returns to action on Friday, September 27, 2024, when they travel to face Jefferson University.  First serve is set for 6:00 p.m.
