Bri Rider and Avery White led three players in double figures while Caleigh Edwards sank five free throws in the final two minutes as the Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team defeated Post University 70-59 at the Drubner Center in Waterbury, Connecticut on Saturday.
The Griffins improve to 3-1 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games and 7-9 overall. Post falls to 2-13 overall and 1-3 in league play.
Rider scored 13 points (6-8 FFG) and also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. White added 13 points off the bench and had a game high five steals. Bridie McCann was the third player in double figures for the Griffins with 11 points. Edwards and Sara Tamoun had nine points apiece. Tamoun and Edwards also led the team with four assists apiece.  Emily Sekerak added six rebounds and two blocks on the afternoon.
It was Edwards who provided  a spark late in the game, reentering with five minutes left and the Griffins leading by just one 56-55. Still leading by one, 58-57 after both teams exchanged points, Edwards assisted on two straight CHC baskets (McCann and Rider), starting what would be a 12-2 run to close out the game.  Post cut the lead to three 62-59 with 2:18 left before Edwards was fouled and made her first of three trips to the free throw line in the final two minutes, making five of six from the charity stripe.  White added a free throw with 42 seconds left and Sekerak sank two with 21 ticks on the clock to complete the final run and secure the win.
The Eagles had taken their first least of the game in the third period, following an 8-0 run the erased a six point Griffins lead and gave Post a 42-40 lead with 5:25 left in the third period. Chestnut Hill countered with a 7-0 run, fueled by five points from White to lead 47-42 before Post cut the lead back to two 51-49 heading into the final period.
The two-point margin was identical to CHC's halftime lead  despite the Griffins holding an eight point lead with four minutes left to go in the half. Post outscored Chestnut Hill 10-4 in that final four minute stretch to shave the Griffins lead to two, 34-32.
The Griffins held the Eagles to just one field in the first quarter (1-13) as they jumped out to a 15-8 lead in the first ten minutes of action. McCann sank two three point baskets and White added one of her own to turn a two point lead into nine, 15-6 with a 9-2 run before the Eagles tacked on two more before the quarter ended.
For the game, the Griffins shot 40.3% (27-67) while holding the Eagles to just 27.9% (17-61) shooting. Post scored 21 of their 59 points from the free throw line (21-30) while the Griffins made nine of 12(75%), including an 8-for-10 effort in the final two minutes. (CHC shot just two free throws over the first 38 minutes of play). CHC held a 46-41 rebounding advantage and the Griffins' bench outscored the Eagles bench 29-17.
