Griffins Pull Away in Second Quarter and Cruise to Victory over Wildcats

Four players scored double figures as the Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team pulled away in the second quartet rot cruise to a 76-48 win over Wilmington University Tuesday night at Sorgenti Arena.

The Griffins climb to 11-10 overall and improve to 7-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games with the win.  The Wildcats remain winless with a 0-19 overall record and 0-8 mark in league play.

Bridie McCann and Avery White led the way for the Griffins with 14 points apiece.  Tikyra Miller and Bri Rider added 12 and 11 points, respectively.  Tiayo Adelekan led the team with six rebounds.  Rider, Siobhan Boylan, and Caleigh Edwards had five boards apiece and Edwards led the team with four assists.

The two teams made just four field goals apiece in the first quarter as the Griffins clung to a narrow 15-14 lead. After one quarter.  Two minutes into the second quarter a Wildcat basket gave the visitors a 16-15 lead, their last of the game as the Griffins scored the next 20 points to take command of the contest and a 35-16 lead with just 1:35 left in the quarter.

Cha'kya Johnson's layup started the run at the 6:18 mark and was followed by a layup from rider and two driving layups from Miller.  McCann then canned two three-point shots to up the lead to 29-16.  Another Rider basket followed along with a couple of free throws before Miller capped the run with another one of her driving layups to complete the run.  Wilmington's Armani Bell-Jackson (team-high 11 points) scored back-to-back baskets before White closed out the quarter with a layup giving the Griffins a 37-20 lead at halftime.

The Griffins increased the lead to 27 in the third quarter, with a 4-for-5 shooting effort and ten points from White in the period setting the pace as CHC led 63-36 heading into the final ten minutes of action.

Wilmington shaved five points off the lead before a 13-4 run by the Griffins pushed the lead to its biggest margin, 76-45.  CHC got baskets from Annie Jackson, Julianna Difebbo and two from Anaisah Malone   along with a pair of free throws apiece from Sara Tamoun and Edwards to fuel the run before settling in for the 76-48 win.

For the game the Griffins shot 39.4% (28-71) from the field while holding the Wildcats to a 31.8% (14-44) effort.  Chestnut hill outrebounded the Wilmington 42-36 and had better ball control with just 17 turnovers to WU's 31.

The women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, February 1 as they travel to Rutherford, new Jersey to take on the Felician University Golden Falcons in a  CACC crossover contest.  Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
