Tigers Hand Griffins First Conference Loss of Season

The Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team suffered their first conference loss of the season Wednesday night as nationally ranked holy Family University handed the Griffins a 95-69 loss at Sorgenti Arena.

The Griffins fall to 6-9 overall and 2-1 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games.  The tigers, ranked #21 in the latest D2CSC National top 25 Media poll improve to 11-3 overall and 3-0 in league play.

Avery White led the Griffins with 15 points (6-8 FG).  Bridie McCann added 11 points (3-7 FG) while Tikyra Miller and Tiayo Adelekan chipped in nine points apiece.  Bri Rider paced the Griffins rebounding efforts with five while Sara Tamoun and Caleigh Edwards had four apiece.  Tamoun led the team with five assists.

The Griffins kept the Tigers within arms length, trailing by no more than five points until the final two minutes of the first quarter when Holy Family completed an 8-2 run to lead 25-16 with 1:29 left.  McCann scored the Griffins final four points of the quarter to cut the margin to seven 27-20 heading into the next period.

The Tigers scored the first five points of the second quarter to take a double digit lead at 32-20 before the Griffins countered with an 11-2 uprising to pull within three 34-31 with 3:48 left.  Miller started the run with a three-point bucket and then added a layup.  Emily Sekerak hit a mid range jumper at the 5:19 mark and Adelekan closed out the run with a pair of layups. The Tigers again went up by eight before White scored five straight points to cut the gap to three again, 39-36 with 1:19 left.   HFU's Carolyn Prevost (14 points) closed out the scoring with a traditional three point play to give the tigers a 42-36 lead at halftime.

Tamoun's layup to open the third quarter cut the lead to four at 42-38.  The Tigers then exploded with a 19-4 run to take a 19-point lead, 61-42 midway through the quarter and never looked back, leading by 17 heading into the final quarter.  HFU outscored CHC 22-11 in the final period to completed the 95-69 win.

Kaelah Carter led the Tigers with 24 points while Taylor Hinkle added 20.  Skyler Searfoss led the team with five rebounds, six assists and three steals to go along with her 11 points. Jessica Riepe added 15 points (5-5 3FG).

For the game the Tigers connected on 12 of 14 shots from three point range (85.7%) and 34 of 58 overall (58.6%). The Griffins shot 50% (26-52) but were just 3-for-12 (25%) from three-point range.  Holy Family held a 28-27 rebound advantage  and took advantage of 19 Griffin turnovers, converting them into 29 points, while the Griffins scored just 18 points off 13 Tiger turnovers.

The women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, January 11, 2025 when they travel to face Post University in Waterbury, Connecticut.  Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
