Griffins Come Up Short in Five Set Thriller against Mavericks

A hard fought women's volleyball match between Chestnut Hill College and Mercy University took place Monday night  at Sorgenti Arena with the Griffins nearly pulling off an upset of the Mavericks before falling in a five set thriller, 3-2.

The Griffins fall to 4-17 overall.  The Mavericks improve to 13-3.

Chestnut Hill opened the match with a 25-23 win before the Mavericks tied the score at 1-1, winning set two 25-16.  The Griffins came back to take a 2-1 lead with a 25-20 win in the third set.  Mercy rallied, however, to win the fourth set 25-20 and then battle to take the deciding set 15-12.

A trio of Griffins reached double figures for kills led by Maya Hopson's 15.  Kate Hanley added 14 while Nicole Dimiris, 13.   Lilian Bandel recorded a career-high seven kills, providing additional offense to the Griffins' attack.  Sofia Rodriguez had 46 assists setting the Griffins' offense.

Sadie Bayko led the team with four service aces.  Hopson, Sarah Allen and Bandel had two apiece.

On the defensive side, Bandel led all players with a gamer and career-high 16 digs. Alex Crespin added 14 while Allen chipped in ten.  Dimiris had five blocks on the night while Hopson and Rodriguez had three apiece.  Bandel also recorded her first career block.

For the game, Mercy recorded 60 kills while Chestnut Hill had 54.  The Griffins held an 11-7 edge in aces but were out dug on the defensive side 71-59.  Both teams had a total of eight team blocks.

The women's volleyball team returns to action for a conference match at Georgian Court University on Wednesday, October 29, 2025 in Lakewood, New Jersey.  Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
