The Chestnut Hill College Men's Basketball team forced overtime, rallying from a seven point deficit late in the second half to defeat Post University 70-66 in the overtime period to earn the victory in their conference opener at Sorgenti Arena Tuesday afternoon.
The Griffins improve to 2-4 overall and 1-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. The Eagles fall to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in league play. Chestnut Hill has now won the last three contests against the Eagles, dating back to February 3, 2024. The griffins had previously lost seven of the last eight games against Post, going back to the 2014-15 season.
Four players scored in double figures for the Griffins, led by Jeremiah Gorham and Landon Shivers 15 points apiece. Gorham connected on five of ten shots from the field and added four assists while Shivers was 6-9 from the field , including a three point basket. Shivers also had six rebounds
Alejandro Redondo Cybak scored 14 points while also grabbing a game high 15 rebounds. He also dished out three assists. Amari Dow rounded out the double figure scorers with 12 points while also recording three assists.
The Griffins, who trailed by as many as ten points in the second half, found themselves down by seven with just 4:33 left in regulation. The home squad chipped away at the deficit, scoring the next six points to pull within one 53-52 with 2:42 left. A three-point basket by Post's Derrick Thomas put the eagles back up by four 56-52 with 2:16 left. Neither team scored until Gorham made two free throws with 48 seconds left. Cybak forced a turnover with 34 seconds left and later connected on a short jumper with just 11 seconds to go to tie the game, eventually sending it into overtime as Post's last second shot fell short.
In the overtime period the Eagles took a 59-58 lead on another Thomas three-ball. However the griffins came right back, scoring nine straight points to lead by eight 67-59 with 1:04 left. Dow had five of the nine points, and the run was capped by a dunk from Tyler Spencer. Post followed with a 7-1 run to pull within two 68-66 with just eight seconds left before Dow sealed the win with two free throws with just under five ticks on the clock.
In the opening half, the Griffins held a nine point lead, 24-15 with 8:15 left only to see the eagles soar back and tie the game by halftime with a 13-4 spurt over the final eight minutes of the period.
Post took the lead early in the second half and expanded it to as many as ten points, 45-35 with 11:28 left and still led by seven when the Griffins began their comeback to force overtime.
For the game, the Eagles and the Griffins both connected on 24 field goals with the Griffins taking one more attempt (59-58), giving the eagles a slightly higher shooting percentage (41.4%- 40.7%). Post doubled up the Griffins from beyond thew arc,, making 12 three-pointers to CHC's six. The Griffins, however, connected on 16 of 20 free throw attempts (80%) while the Eagles made just six of 15 (40%). The Eagles also had a 38-36 rebound advantage while the Griffins committed two fewer turnovers (15-17).
The men's basketball team returns to action on Sunday, November 30, 2025 when they travel to face Adelphi University in Garden City, New York. Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
