Late Run by Chargers Leads to a Loss for Griffins

A late surge by the Dominican University men's basketball team led to a six-point win for the visitors as the defeated host Chestnut Hill College 80-74 Saturday afternoon at Sorgenti Arena.

The Griffins fall to 3-7 overall and 2-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. The Chargers improve to 3-1 in league play and 6-2 overall.

Dominican used a 12-4 run in the final 1:58 to erase a narrow two-point Griffin lead, including a 7-2 effort in the final 36 seconds.   The game itself saw 13 lead changes and eight ties with neither team producing a double-digit advantage at any point in the contest.

Four Griffins finished the game in double figures, led by Amari Dow's 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds.  Alejandro Redondo Cybak also had eight rebounds and scored 13 points.  Marshall Baker came off  the bench to contribute 12 points, and Jeremiah Gorham added ten points and a game-high five assists.  Cybak and Kamal Lee had four assists apiece.

Chestnut Hill was in control early, jumping out to a 10-2 lead five minutes into the game and expanded it to 25-16 at the 7:56 mark following a Dow layup.  Baker's second three-point field goal of the game, followed by two free throws a minute later, kept the lead at eight 32-24 with 3:52 left before the Chargers exploded with nine straight points to take their first lead of the game 33-32 with 1:12 left in the half.  Tyler Spencer's three-point field goal as time was running out put the Griffins ahead at the half 35-33.

Dominican opened the second half on a 14-5 run to take a 47-40 lead with 14:15 left.  Three straight three-point baskets from the Griffins, (Dow, Cybak, Gorham) put the Griffins ahead again 49-47.  Neither team led by more than three points over the next ten minutes with the lead changing hands five times with the Griffins holding their final lead of two late in the game when the chargers made their late surge in the final 1:58 to secure the win.

For the game, the Chargers shot 53.2% (33-62) from the field while the Griffins shot 46.9% (30-64).  Thirty-two of those Dominican field goals were two point baskets as the chargers made just one of 11 three-point attempts.  The Griffins made eight of 23 three-point shots – leading to the chargers outscoring the Griffins 64-44 inside the three-point arc and the Griffins outscoring the Chargers 24-3 from outside the three-point arc.  DUNY had a 13-6 advantage from the free throw line, making 13-17 (76.5%) to CHC's 6-9(66.7%).  Both teams had 33 rebounds.

The men's basketball team returns to action on Thursday, December 18, 2025 when they host the University of the District of Columbia. Tipoff at Sorgenti Arena is 2:30 p.m.
