Adelekan Powers Griffins to Win over Chargers

Tiayo Adelekan returned to action after missing the pass two games with an injury to lead the Chestnut Hill College women's basketball team to a 75-71 win over Dominican University Saturday afternoon at Sorgenti arena.

The Griffins improve to 3-1 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference gamers and even their overall record at 5-5 with the win.  The Chargers fall to 2-7 overall and 12-3 in league play.

Adelekan led the Griffins with 20 points (7-11 FG, 6-7 FT) and also had a team high seven rebounds. Tamia Washington added 11 points in 25 minutes off the bench.  Sara Tamoun chipped in nine points and also had seven rebounds, a team high six assists and four steals.

As a team the Griffins recorded 20 steals in the contest, the most by a Griffins' women's basketball team since they swiped a school-record 21 vs. Post University on December 8, 2012.  Kaya Mobley led the way with five steals and also added five assists.  Sabria Mann and Aryianna Sumpter had three steals apiece while Anahita Jackson had two.

The two teams battled through much of the first three quarters with neither team pulling away from the other.  Four lead changes took place over the first 35 minutes with the Chargers holding a slim 42-41 advantage with 4:36 left in the third quarter.  Chestnut Hill closed out the quarter with a 17-6 explosion to take a 58-48 lead heading into the final period.

The Griffins maintained their lead and increased it to as many as 12 with the margin fluctuating between seven and 12 points for the first eight minutes of the final quarter.  Washington's three-ball with 1:47 left put the Griffins up 12, 73-61 with 1:47 left. The chargers were not finished however, scoring eight straight points to pull within four 73-69 with 19 seconds left.  Tikyra Miller added two free throws with 14 seconds left and DUNY's Dalana Taylor countered with six seconds left to round out the scoring.  A steal and layup attempt by the chargers' Ketura Rutty was short and the Griffins held on to win.

In the opening quarter, the Chargers scored the first eight points of the game which forced the Griffins to play from behind the entire first quarter.   Cayla Howard's three-point basket game the Chargers a 12-5 lead before the Griffins rebounded, outscoring Dominican 8-2 to pull within one at the end of the quarter, 14-13.

Washington opened the second quarter with a three-point basket to give the Griffins their first lead of the game, 16-14.  An 11-5 run by Dominican reversed the lead once more with the chargers taking a 25-21 lead, then increasing it to 28-23 with 1:11 left in the half. The Griffins scored the final seven points of the second quarter to lead 30-28 at the break.

Dominican opened the third quarter with a 12-5 run to lead 40-35 and still held a one point advantage when the Griffins forced five turnovers to help produced their 17-6 explosion to take control of the game.

Isabella Javer led Dominican with 24 points.  Howard added 13 and Rutty 11 along with a game high eight rebounds.

The two teams turned in identical 25-for-58 shooting efforts from the field (43.1%)  and identical 6-14 (42.9%)efforts from beyond the arc.  Chestnut hill struggled from the free throw line but went to the charity stripe more often, making 19 of 35 (54.3%) from the free throw line while the chargers, while more efficient  made just 15 of 22 (68.2%).  The Griffins forced a total of 27 turnovers, scoring 20 points off the DUNY miscues while committing 18 of their own (12 points off turnovers for the Chargers).  The Chargers did outrebound the Griffins 46-32.

The women's basketball team returns to action on Tuesday, December 16, 2025 with an afternoon contest at Division I Drexel University  before coming back to Sorgenti Arena for their last game before Christmas Break, hosting the university of the District of Columbia. Tipoff is at 12:00 p.m.
