Three players scored in double figures as the Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team closed out the non-conference portion of their schedule with a 61-45 win over the University of the District of Columbia Thursday afternoon at Sorgenti Arena.
The Griffins even their record at 6-6 with the win. The firebirds fall to 3-7. The game was also Chestnut Hill's final game of the month before the Christmas holiday break.Â
Tiayo Adelekan led all scorers with 18 points (6-12 FG, 6-7 FT). Seniors Sara Tamoun and Kaya Mobley added 11 points apiece. Adelekan and Tamoun led the team with seven rebounds apiece while Mobley and Tikyra Miller dished out four assists each. In addition, for the third time in four games Tamoun has recorded four steals. Tamia Washington added two steals and two blocks on the afternoon.
The Griffins led wire-to-wire, scoring the first seven points of the contest and jumping out to a 9-3 lead after a pair of Aryianna Sumpter free throws. CHC increased the lead to 12 as Mobley and Adelekan each made a layup in the final two minutes to give the Griffins a 16-4 lead. Chestnut Hill held the Firebirds to just one field goal and two free throws in the quarter.
A 14-6 run by the Griffins in the second quarter pushed the lead to 20, 30-10 midway through the second quarter.  Tamoun capped the run with four straight free throws after drawing a foul and the UDC player then getting assessed a technical foul after the play. The Firebirds closed within 13 late in the period but a three-point basket from Bryce Harvey-Carr at the buzzer made the score 35-19 at the half.
The Firebirds opened the third quarter with a pair of baskets to close within 12, 35-23 before a 10-2 run by the Griffins with Adelekan scoring five of the points pushed the lead back to 20, 45-35 with 6:36 left in the quarter. Both teams scored just five points apiece over the rest of the quarter and the Griffins held a 50-30 lead heading into the final ten minutes of action.
A three-point basket from Anaisah Malone and two more Adelekan free throws push the Griffins lead to its biggest margin, 55-30 in the first 90 seconds of the final quarter. UDC would come no closer than 14 the rest of the game with Mobley's layup in the final 20 seconds providing the final margin of victory.
Free throw shooting provided the Griffins with a decided advantage as the team connected on 22 of 31 from the charity stripe (71%) while the Firebirds made just ten of 18 (55.6%) Both squads made 17 field goals with the Firebirds producing the more efficient numbers (17-48 to 17-60 for CHC). The Griffins outrebounded the Firebirds 45-36, including an 18-9 advantage on the offensive glass- leading to a 15-6 advantage for the Griffins in the second chance points category.Â
The women's basketball team returns to action after the holiday break with a game at Felician University  on Saturday January 3, 2026. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
