In their first game coming off the Christmas break, the Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team struggled as they lost to Felician university 73-48 at the Joal and joseph Job Gymnasium in Rutherford, New Jersey on Saturday.
The Griffins fall to 6-7 overall and 3-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. The Golden Falcons improve to 5-0 in league play and 10-2 overall.
Sara Tamoun led the Griffins with 11 points while Kourin Carew came off the bench and added a season-best ten points (4-9 FG). Tamoun also led the team with four assists while Tiayo Adelekan led the team with five rebounds.
Felician led the game wire-to-wire, scoring the first seven points and opening up a double digit lead 11-3 before the midway point of the first quarter. The Golden Falcons extended the lead to as many as 18 points in the period before taking a 25-9 lead into the second quarter. The host squad connected on 11 of 16 shots from the field in the period.
A 9-0 run by Felician extended the lead to 25 points before Tamoun broke the streak with a pair of free throws in the final minute. Felician added two more baskets following the Tamoun free throws and led 42-15 at halftime.
The Griffins opened the third quarter with an 11-0 run, getting a pair of baskets from Tikyra Miller, a layup from Adelekan and a layup and three point basket from Tamoun to pull within 16, 42-26. Chestnut Hill finished the quarter outscoring Felician 22-7 to pull within 12, 49-37 heading into the final quarter.
The Golden Falcons opened the final period with an 16-3 spurt to quickly push their lead back over 20 points, 65-42 with 4:51 left. Two baskets from Bry Hicks and another bucket from Miller cut the lead to 19 but that would be as close as the Griffins would get as the Golden Falcons scored the final six points of the game to win 73-48.
For the game, the Golden Falcons shot 45.3% (29-64) from the field while the Griffins struggled, making just 18 of 57 shots (31.6%). Felician also outrebounded the Griffins 51-28 including a 22-11 advantage on the offensive glass, which gave Felician a 19-2 advantage in the second chance points category.Â
The women's basketball team returns to action on Tuesday, January 6, 2006 when they travel to face Wilmington University in Newark, Delaware. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
