Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Late Strike from Lightning Leads to Narrow Loss for Griffins

A late rally from host Goldey-Beacom college led the Lightning to a 68-65 win over the Chestnut Hill College Men's Basketball team Wednesday night at the Jones Center in Wilmington, Delaware.

The Griffins fall to 1-1 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games and 2-6 overall.  The Lightning improve to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in league play.

Jeremiah Gorham led all scorers with 19 points (6-10 FG) while Kamal Lee added 17 points.  Landon Shivers added 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds.  Alejandro Redondo Cybak led all players with nine rebounds while Amari Dow led the team with three assists.

The Griffin held a slim three point lead early in the second half and turned it into a double digit advantage with a 14-6 uprising over a span of ten minutes, leading 62-51 with 6:32 left in the game.  The Lightning scored the next 11 points to tie the game at 62-62  before Lee's jumper put the Griffins ahead 64-62 with 1:21 left.  GBC's Brian Blanchet added a three-point basket to give the Lightning their first lead, 65-64 since late in the first half.  After a Gorham free throw tied the game at 65-65  with 40 seconds left.  Blanchet struck again with 23 seconds left to give the Lightning a three-point lead 68-65 with 23 seconds left.  The Griffins had two opportunities to score in the final seconds but could not convert  as the Lightning hung on for the win.

In the first half, it was four three point baskets, one each from Gorham and Dow and a pair from Lee that helped give the Griffins and early 14-6 lead which they later extended to double digits 18-8. The Lightning followed with a 18-4 run to take a 26-22 lead with 7:30 left in the half and held the lead until Lee's basket with 3:19 put the Griffins back on top 33-31.  The Lightning then scored five straight points before the Griffins countered with five straight points of their own with Malcolm Day's basket with seven seconds left giving the Griffins a 38-36 lead at halftime and momentum heading into the second half.

Overall, the Griffins shot slightly better (44.2% to GBC's 41.0%), with the Lightning making two more field goals.  Both teams made seven three point baskets while the Griffins made one more free throw  (12-11) but were less efficient from the line, making just 12-19 (11-16 for GBC).  Chestnut Hill also held a 39-31 rebounding advantage.  However, they turned the ball over 17 times while the Lightning committed just nine turnovers on the night, leading to a 14-5 advantage for the hosts in the points of turnovers category.

The men's basketball team returns to action on Tuesday, December 9, 2025 when they host holy Family University at Sorgenti Arena.  Tipoff is set for 8:00 p.m.
