Lacrosse Team Opens Season with 16-10 Win over Wheeling

Noah Hammon and Mick Kilgallon scored five goals apiece as the Chestnut hill college Men's Lacrosse team opened their 2025 season with a 16-10 win over Wheeling University Saturday evening at Tierney Field at the USA Lacrosse headquarters in Sparks, Maryland.

The game was the season opener for both teams.

Kilgallon scored five goals and assisted on four others to lead the Griffins. Hammon also added five goals and two assists.  Sam Slater scored three times and assisted on two goals while Will Duddy had a pair of goals and an assist.  Paul Katko-Capozzi rounded out the goal scorers for the Griffins with one.

Anthony Arch had five ground balls to lead Chestnut Hill while Silas Charles and Carter Getz added four apiece.  Getz was also the Griffins primary faceoff taker, winning 17 of 29.  Adam Daley had 12 saves in net for the Griffins.

The Griffins jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with Hammon scoring after taking a pass from Kilgallon at the 11:58 mark.   After the Cardinals tied the game four minutes later, Hammon scored two straight times with Duddy assisting on the first to take a 3-1 lead.

The two teams exchanged goals in the second period until the Griffins scored three straight times in the final three minutes to go ahead 8-4.  Kilgallon added his second goal of the game with just over two minutes left and Katko-Capozzi and slater followed as the period was coming to an end.    Wheeling scored at the end of the period to make the score 8-5 at halftime.

Wheeling opened the scoring in the third quarter to pull within two before the Griffins tallied five straight goals to take a decisive 13-6 lead.  Slater and Duddy started the onslaught five minutes into the quarter and Kilgallon followed with three straight goals.  Slater and Hammon assisted on the last two.

Slater completed his hat-trick midway through the fourth quarter with an unassisted goal to make the score 14-8 while Hammon tallied his fifth goal of the game late in the contest.   Duddy's unassisted goal with 2:30 left rounded out the scoring.

The men's lacrosse team returns to action on Saturday, February 22, 2025 for their home opener, taking on Seton Hill university at Victory Field in Lafayette Hill.   Start time is set for 12:00 p.m.
