The Chestnut Hill College Men's Lacrosse battled against nationally ranked Pace University but came up short at the #5 Setters earned a 10-5 victory Saturday afternoon at Victory field in Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania.
Pace's ten goals were their lowest offensive output of the season as they entered today's game averaging 16 goals per game. The Setters improve to 4-0 with the win while the Griffins fall to 1-2.
Jake Ballerini scored twice for the Griffins while Jayden Basalatan, Will Duddy and Evan Farlow added one goal apiece. Sam Slater and Silas Charles had two ground balls apiece as 13 different players on the Chestnut Hill squad recorded at least one ground ball. Nicky Fortis had three caused turnovers. Adam Daley made 13 saves in goal.
The Setters jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after one period of play. Ballerini got the Griffins on the board at the 11:37 mark of the second quarter and added a second unassisted goal with 4:45 left to pull the Griffins within one 3-2. Pace tallied a man=up goal with 23 seconds left to lead 4-2 in the half.
The third quarter belonged to the Setters as they outscored the Griffins 5-0 in the period to take a 9-2 lead heading into the final 15 minutes of action. A goal in the opening minute by the visitors pushed the lead to 10-2. Less than a minute later Farlow got ahead of the entire defense and fired a shot past PU goalkeeper Jack Kern to make the score 10-3.
Basalatan found the back of the net at the 9:56 mark, scoring after receiving a pass from Slater to make the score 10-4. Duddy made the score 10-5 at the 5:21 mark with Mick Kilgallon assisting on the play. Both teams added two shots on goal in the final five minutes but neither team would score again as the setters hung on for the win.
The men's lacrosse team returns to action on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, when they travel to New York to take on the Molloy University Lions in Rockville Centre. First faceoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
