Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Griffins Cruise to big Win over Firebirds as Hill Breaks Single Season Rebound Record

Five players reached double figure scoring and Neal Hill broke his own single season rebound record as the Chestnut Hill college men's Basketball team hit the century mark in a 101-85 victory over the University of the District of Columbia Tuesday night at Sorgenti Arena.

The Griffins improve to 13-12 with the win while the Firebirds fall to 4-18.

Hill grabbed 12 rebounds to become the first player in program history to record 300 or more rebounds in a season.  Needing seven rebounds to reach 300 and break his own single season mark of 299 last season, Hill reached the mark two minutes into the second half and added five more to give him 305 for the season.

IV Pettit led all scorers with 19 points (6-12 FG) while Kamal Lee added 18 (6-7 3FG).  Omari Salvi came off the bench to score 14 points while Alejandro Redondo Cybak added 14.  Noah Charles rounded out the double figure scorers with ten points. Hill also led the team with eight assists to go along with his 12 boards. Cybak added nine rebounds and three blocks.

As a team the Griffins made 17 three-point baskets, breaking the old school mark of 15 set back in January 2006 against Philadelphia Bible (now Cairn University).

A 13-2 uprising by the Griffins in the early part of the first half turned the Firebirds only lead of the game into a nine point advantage, 19-8 following a Cybak layup.  A Lucas Dunn three-ball pushed the lead to 15, 29-14 with 9:29 left.  Seven straight points from the Firebirds cut the lead to eight but UDC would get no closer for the remainder of the half, as the Griffins again expanded the lead to double digits, taking a 51-39 lead into the locker room at halftime.,

The Firebirds scored first to start the second half with the Griffins following with a 17-7 spurt to push their lead to 20, 68-48 and later increased the lead to 30, 88-58 following a Marshall Baker three-point basket with 7:26 left.  With both teams starting to put their backups into the game, the Firebirds chipped away at the lead, outscoring the Griffins 25-11 over the final 6:40 to make the Griffins final victory margin 16 points.

Chestnut Hill's 101 points are the most the team has scored in a game since February 18, 2020, five years to the day, when the Griffins put up 101 against Goldey-Beacom College.

For the game, the Griffins shot 53.6% (37-69) while making 17 of 35 three point shots (48.6%).  The Firebirds shot 47.8% (33-69)and made nine of 21 three point shots (42.9%).  The Griffins dominated on the glass, 46-31 and outscored the Firebirds 15-2 in the second chance points category.

The men's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, February 22, 2025, when they travel to Wilmington University for a crucial conference contest.  Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
