Three players reached double figures, but Wilmington University pulled away in the second half as they defeated the Chestnut Hill College Men's Basketball team 92-76 Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletic complex in Wilmington, Delaware.
The Griffins fall to 13-13 overall and 8-7 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contests. The Wildcats improve to 8-18 overall and 6-8 in league play. The Griffins are sitting in a tie for second place in the CACC South Division and have a chance of clinching a home playoff spot with a win in their final game of the regular season against Georgian Court.
IV Pettit led the Griffins with 21 points while Omari Salvi added 16. Noah Charles scored ten points while Neal Hill added nine and a game high ten rebounds. Kamal Lee led the team with four assists.
The Wildcats and Griffins battled throughout the first half with neither team leading by more than five points at any one time with 11 ties and seven lead changes in the first 20 minutes of action. The Griffins used an 11-4 run to turn an early deficit into a five point lead 24-19 midway through the half. Salvi's three-point basket capped the run.  The Wildcats came back to reclaim the lead before another Salvi three-ball put CHC back on top 30-27 7:20 left. The Griffins still led by three 39-36 with 2:57 left when the Wildcats closed out the half on an 8-0 spurt to take a 44-39 lead at halftime.
Hill's tip-in six minutes into the second half, cut the WU lead to two 55-53 but seven straight points from the host squad pushed their lead up to nine 62-53. Six straight points (four FT's from Pettit and a layup from Charles) pulled the Griffins within three 62-59. The Wildcats then got hot, making eight of their next ten shots from the field, exploding for a 23-6 run to lead 85-65 with 3:13 left. The Griffins came no closer than 16 (the final margin) in the final minutes of action.
Wilmington shot 60% (18-30) in the second half and finished the game shooting 51.5%( 34-66). The Griffins shot 39.1% (25-64) from the field and 22.7% (5-22) from three point range. (WU 11-24- 45.8%). Wilmington outrebounded the Griffins 44-39 while CHC committed four fewer turnovers. (10-14).
The men's basketball team returns to action for their final regular season game, taking on Georgian Court University at Sorgenti Arena. Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m. Â
