Chargers Snap Griffins Win Streak with a 75-73 Win

The Chestnut Hill College Men's Basketball team had their four game winning streak snapped Saturday afternoon as Dominican University rallied in the second half to defeat the Griffins 75-73 at Sorgenti Arena.

The Griffins fall to 11-11 overall and 7-5 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games.  Dominican improves to 10-2 in league play and 15-7 overall.  Despite the loss, the Griffins are tied for first place in the CACC south division with Goldey-Beacom College with identical 7-5 conference records.

Alejandro Redondo Cybak led all scorers with 26 points (11-16 FG, 3-5 3FG).  IV Pettit joined Cybak in double figures with 18 points.  Neal Hill led all players with 12 rebounds, his 13th consecutive game grabbing double-digit rebounds.  Noah Charles led all players with six assists.

The Griffins took a three-point lead from halftime (34-31) and turned in into a ten-point advantage 47-37 fueled by a pair of three-point baskets from Cybak and another from Pettit. The Chargers pushed back with an 8-0 run in just 90 seconds to cut the lead to two 47-45 with 14:10 left. Cybak than began a 7-1 run by the Griffins with a putback to increase the Chestnut Hill lead back to eight 54-46 midway through the half.

Dominican again began to chip away at the lead, using a 15-5 uprising to take their first lead of the half, 61-59 with 4:36 left in the game.  The Chargers increased the lead to as many as five as the game entered the final two minutes and still led by five with 24 seconds left.  Charles followed with a three point basket to cut the lead to two 72-70 with 17 seconds left.  A free throw by DU's Jaden Honis pushed the lead to three and following a timeout Pettit took an inbounds pass from Kamal Lee and sank a three-point field goal to tie the game, 73-73 with seven seconds left.  Honis then drove through the Griffin defense for a layup and was fouled with a second left.  He subsequently missed the free throw, but the Griffins were unable to get a shot off as the Chargers held on for the win.

The first half saw five ties and ten lead changes as both teams battled back and forth for the 20 minutes of the period.  Neither team was able to pull away during the period with the biggest lead in the half was held by the Griffins at five points 31-26 with 1:43 in the half.  Dominican scored five straight points to tie the score before Pettit hit a three-ball at the buzzer to give Chestnut Hill a 34-31 lead at halftime.

Honis led the Chargers with 22 points.  Tyler Edore added 12 points and a team-high six points.  Isaiah Honis also has 12 points.

Offensive rebounds played a big role in the course of action with the Chargers converting 17 offensive rebounds into 20 points  while the Griffins, with 12 offensive rebounds, scored just 14 second half points.  Dominican also shot 17 of 27 from the free throw line (63%) while the Griffins made just seven of 12 (58.3%).  For the game, the griffins shot 50% (27-54) from the field while the Chargers shot 42.4% (28-66).  CHC made 12 three-point shots to DU's two and outrebounded the Chargers 40-33.  The Griffins also committed an uncharacteristic 23 turnovers, leading to 18 points for the Chargers. (CHC was outscored 18-5 in the points off turnover category.)  

The men's basketball team returns to action on Tuesday, February 11, 025 when they travel to face Goldey-Beacom College in Wilmington, Delaware.  Tipoff is set for 8:00 p.m.
