The Chestnut Hill College Baseball team opened conference play Friday afternoon, splitting a doubleheader with Holy Family University at Hostelley Field in North Wales, Pennsylvania.
The Griffins won the opener 5-3 before dropping game two 2-1. Chestnut Hill is now 6-7 overall and 1-1in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. Holy Family is also 1-1 in league play and 3-7 overall.
Jake Schweiker pitched 7.1 innings of one-run ball, striking out six to earn his first win of the season (1-2) in the opener. The senior allowed seven hits and walked three. Colby Seelig picked up the save, striking out three in 1.2 innings of work.
Four different Griffin players had two hits apiece with Michael Benedetto II blasting a solo home run and a long double. Christina Peluso had a double, single and two RBI while Michael Pascoe and Aiden Myers had two singles apiece.
The Griffins jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fourth. Benedetto walked, stole second and came around to score on Dylan Broderick's double to right center field to open the scoring. Broderick was sacrificed to third by Kenyon Motley and scored on Peluso's double down the right field line to score Broderick. Peluso later scored on Aiden Myers sacrifice fly, giving Chestnut Hill a 3-0 lead.
Benedetto's fifth inning home run pushed the lead to 4-0. The Tigers cut the lead to 4-1 in the seventh inning, scoring following an infield error. Benedetto doubled in the eighth inning and scored on Peluso's single to get the run back for the Griffins.
The Tigers scored twice in the ninth inning and had the tying runs on base when Seelig struck out Garrison Pregulman looking at a called third strike to end the game.
In game two, Jason Kelly pitched a complete, giving up just four hits while striking out six but was on the losing end of a 2-1 decision.
The Griffins had three hits in the contest and had several chances to score as Tigers pitcher Jordan Sesar walked five.
The Tigers struck first scoring twice in the opening inning, first via an RBI single and the second on an infield error. The Griffins lone run came in the third inning as Motley scored on a wild pitch.
Trailing 2-1, the Griffins left runners on base in three of the final four innings and Sesar struck out the side in Chestnut Hill's final at bat leaving a runner stranded on second.
The baseball team concludes their series with Holy Family on Saturday, March 15, 2025, with a doubleheader hosted by the Tigers at James Ramp Athletics Complex in northeast Philadelphia.
