Three players hit home runs as the Chestnut Hill College Baseball team salvaged a split with the college of Staten Island Saturday afternoon at Hostelley Field, winning game two 13-10 after dropping the opener 5-3.
The Griffins are now 4-2 overall while the Dolphins are now 2-5 after the split.
Justin Geiger hit a three run home run, Phoenix Bowman hit a grand slam and Michael Pascoe, a solo home run as part of Chestnut Hill's 12 hit effort in the second game
Bowman finished with three hits and drove in six runs while Geiger drove in three and finished the game with two hits. Aiden Myers also had two hits. Colby Selig earned the win in relief, pitching the final four innings, allowing nine hits and striking out seven while giving up eight runs (three earned).
Geiger blasted his three run home run in the first inning, giving the Griffins an early 4-0 lead. Jason Kelly drove in the first run with an RBI single.
The Dolphins cut the lead in half with two runs in the third before the Griffins struck for four more runs in the bottom half of the inning. Pascoe led off the inning with a home run. Four batters later Dylan Broderick delivered a single to score Kelly with CHC's sixth run. Kenyon Motley then walked to load the bases and two batters later Bowman delivered a two run single to give the Griffins an 8-2 lead.
Two innings later, bowman delivered one of his biggest hits as a Griffin, a grand slam home run. Singles by Michael Benedetto III and Motley started things off. Daniel Ciotti was hit by a pitch loading the bases for Bowman who delivered a bases clearing blast and giving the Griffins a 12-2 lead.
Staten Island scored five times in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 12-7. Shawn Levan's RBI groundout in the bottom of the sixth made the score 13-7. The Dolphins added three more runs in their final at-bat before Selig got T.J. Laino to take a called third strike to end the game.
In the opener the Griffins scored three times in the first inning but the Dolphins chipped away at the lead, tying the game in the sixth inning before scoring twice in the seventh for a 5-3 win.
Bowman, Benedetto and Geiger had the only three hits for the Griffins. Jake Schweiker pitched six innings with a no-decision, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out six. Rich Bonino pitched the seventh inning, allowing the final two runs to take the loss.
Bowman doubled to lead off the bottom half of the first and later scored on Benedetto's double. Kelly drove in the second run with an infield groundout and Benedetto later scored on an error for a 3-0 CHC lead.
Staten Island scored solo runs in the second, fourth and sixth innings and Jack Kehoe delivered a two-run home run in the seventh to give the Dolphins the 5-3 lead which CSI held onto for the win.
