Game Recap: Baseball |

Myers hits Two home Runs as Griffins Split First Two Games of Season Series with Wildcats

Aiden Myers hit home runs in both games as the Chestnut Hill College baseball team earned a split with Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference rival Wilmington University on Saturday, falling to the wildcats 7-6 in 11 innings in the opener while taking the nightcap 7-5 at Hostelley Field in north Wales, Pennsylvania.

The Griffins are now 10-9 overall and 5-3 in CACC games.  The wildcats are 11-8 overall and 3-1 in league play.   The first game of Saturday's doubleheader was also the play-in game for the Bill Giles Invitational with the winner to later play a game at Citizen's Bank Park.

Myers drove in three of the Griffins six runs in the opener all off a home run in the sixth inning and was one of three players to have two hits in the contest. Jason Kelly had a double, a single and an RBI while Michael Benedetto III had two singles.  Colby Seelig took the loss, giving up an unearned run in the top half of the 11th inning.

The Wildcats got nine hits off starter Jake Schweiker in the first six innings, scoring six runs to take a 6-0 lead before the Griffins got on the board.  Kenyon Motley scored CHC's first run on a wild pitch as Alexander Fascia drew a walk.  Benedetto singled and Myers followed with a three run home run to left field to make the score 6-4.

A sacrifice fly by Dylan Broderick brought home Fascia with the fifth CHC run in the bottom half of the eighth and a single from Kelly scored Benedetto with the tying run.

The Griffins put a runner into scoring position in the ninth and tenth innings but were unable to score.  Wilmington struck in the top half of the 11th with an infield single by Chase Fleming to score the go-ahead run.   Mike Melosky was hit by a pitch to lead off the 11th inning.  Bobby Sabatino came in to run for Melosky and moved to second on Phoenix bowman's sacrifice bunt  but the wildcats' Dom Marotta retired the next two batters to preserve the win for the visitors 7-6.

Motley and Myers had two hits apiece in game two as Broderick went the distance to earn a complete game victory 7-5, improving to 3-1 on the season.

Myers got the Griffins on the board in the first inning with a solo home run  and Benedetto drew a bases-loaded walk in the second to give the Griffins a 2-0 lead.

Wilmington scored three runs in the top half of the third and added two more in the fourth inning via Brandon Grygo's two run home run to lead 5-2.

Chestnut Hill got two of those runs back in the bottom half of the fourth  as bowman led off with a double and came around to score on Motley's single.  Motley later scored when Fascia doubled down the left field line, making the score 5-4.

Broderick retired the next six Wilmington batters to keep the score at 5-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth.  Motley reached on an error and advanced to second on a balk and later scored the tying run after two wild pitches.  Angus Moore scored the go-ahead run following Myers' ground rule double.  Michael Pascoe then delivered a single for an insurance run, scoring Benedetto to make the score 7-5.

The Wildcats loaded the bases with one out in the top half of the seventh before Broderick induced a game ending double play ball off the bat of Jose Armando Diaz to salvage the split and give the Griffins a 7-5 win.

The baseball team returns to action on Sunday, March 23, 2025, when they travel to Wilmington University to complete their four game series.  First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 12:00 p.m.
