Griffins Extend Winning Streak to Seven Games with Walkoff Win in Game Two Versus Caldwell

The Chestnut Hill College Baseball team continues to find ways to win, capturing their fourth one-run victory in their last five games as they swept a conference doubleheader from Caldwell University 10-0 and 5-4 Wednesday afternoon at Hostelley field.

The sweep extends their winning streak to a season-high seven games.  All four winning runs in their one-run victories were produced in their final at-bat, including today's second game.  The Griffins improve to 17-14 overall and 12-8 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games with the win.  The Cougars fall to 16-17 overall and 9-12 in league play.

Trailing 4-3 in game two, Cougar pitchers held the griffins to just three hits through the first six innings.  In the seventh, they doubled their hit total with Phoenix Bowman leading off with a single deep in the hole at shortstop.  Wyatt Spinks followed with a single to centerfield and Michael Benedetto III was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Aiden Myers then delivered a single through the right side to score Bowman with the tying run and keeping the bases loaded. Michael Pascoe was then hit by the first pitch thrown by Caldwell reliever Justin Jacobus to score Spinks and secure the walkoff win.

The Griffins scored their first three runs in the third inning, taking advantage of CU starter Johnny Amato's wildness with the first two Chestnut Hill runs scoring on wild pitches.  After Amato's third wild pitch plated Spinks, Myers delivered an Rbi single through the left side to score Benedetto and give Chestnut Hill a 3-0 lead.

The Cougars got to starter Rich Bonino in the fifth inning, loading the bases with one out before giving way to Colby Seelig. Seelig struck out the first batter he faced but gave up a bases-clearing double to Liam Lombardi to give the Cougars a 4-3 lead with all four runs charged to Bonino.

Seelig allowed just one more Caldwell batter to reach base, via an infield error in his final two innings of work.  The senior reliever pitched 2.2 total innings, allowing just one hit while striking out two to earn the win, his fourth of the season.

Myers had two hits and two RBI  to lead the Griffins' offense.  Benedetto reached base three time, a walk and was hit by a pitch twice.

In the opener, Jason Kelly turned in another solid performance, pitching a complete game shutout as the Griffins won 10-0 invoking the 10-run rule after seven innings.  Kelly struck out seven batters and allowed just three singles.  He also hit a solo home run in the third inning to help his own cause.

The Griffins banged out 13 hits with Benedetto recording three.  Myers, Pascoe, and Kenyon Motley had two hits apiece while Pascoe drove in three runs.

Pascoe plated the first CHC run with a single in the first and later scored on Justin Geiger's sacrifice fly, staking the Griffins to an early 2-0 lead. Myers had an RBI single in the second and Kelly added his home run in the third to boost Chestnut Hill's lead to 4-0.

Motley delivered a two-out single in the fifth to score Pascoe and make the score 5-0.  One inning later, Pascoe brought home two more runs with a single to center field to make the score 7-0.

Kelly drew a one-out walk in the seventh and went to third on Motley's double.  Bobby Sabatino reached on an infield error to load the bases for Spinks who delivered a single to short left field to score Kelly.  Benedetto followed with a single into center field to score Sabatino and Motley with the final two runs of the 10-0 win.

The baseball team returns to action on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, when they travel to face the University of Bridgeport.  First pitch is at 3:00 p.m.
