Griffins Defeat Lions to Win Third Straight Game

Fourteen straight points in the second quarter turned a close game into what would become an easy win for the chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team as the won their third straight game, defeating Georgian Court University 67-44 Wednesday night at Sorgenti Arena.

The Griffins improve to 9-7 overall and 6-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games.  The Lions fall to 4-4 in league play and 5-10 overall.,

Tikyra Miller led all scorers with 19 points while Sara Tamoun recorded her second consecutive double-double with 123 points and 12 rebounds.  Tamia Washington added 12 points.   Tiayo Adelekan, Kaya Mobley and Ayrianna Sumpter grabbed five rebounds apiece.  Tamoun and Mobley led the team with four assists while  Sabria Mann had three steals.

Chestnut Hill led by just one point 14-13 with 4:33 left in the second quarter when they started to pull away, scoring the final 14 points of the quarter to hold a 28-13 lead at halftime.  Half of the 14 point explosion came at the free throw line.  Washington started the run with a three-point basket followed by a Kourin Carew layup.  Then came six straight free throws before Adelekan capped things off with a traditional three-point play.

Mann, Tamoun and Miller continued the run with back-to-back-to-back baskets to open the third quarter, extending the run to 20-0 and a 34-13 advantage before the Lions broke the run with a free throw at the 7:17 mark.  GCU did not hit their first field goal of the third quarter until midway through the period.  The Lions closed the gap to 16 by the end of the third quarter with a 12-8 run over the final five minutes.

The Lions cut the lead to 14 to open the fourth quarter before a 15-3 uprising from the Griffins gave the hosts their biggest lead of the contest 61-35 with 4:23 left in the game.  The Lions would come no closer than 21 points the rest of the way.

The Griffins finished the game shooting 36.4% from the field (20-55)  while holding the Lions to just 23.7% shooting (14-59).  Chestnut Hill turned in a stellar effort from the free throw line, making 23 of 26 shots for their best effort of the season to date.  The Griffins also held a 46-38 rebounding advantage.

The women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, January 17, 2026 when they travel to face Caldwell University in northern New Jersey.  Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
