Griffins Cruise to a Win over Lightning

Twelve different players scored as the Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team cruised to a 91-50 win over Goldey-Beacom College Wednesday night at Sorgenti Arena.

The Griffins improve to 11-9 overall and 8-4 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games.  The Lightning fall to 3-9 in league play and 3-16 overall.  Chestnut Hill's 41-point margin of victory was their largest since defeating Wilmington University by 42, 80-39 on January 31, 2024.

Sara Tamoun led all scorers with 23 points (8-14 FG, 4-8 3FG) while pulling down ten rebounds to record her fourth double-double of the season and her third straight game with 20 or more points.  Ther senior guard also added four assists.

Tiayo Adelekan had a near perfect night, shooting 5-5 from the field and 5-6 from the free throw line to finish with 15 points.  Tikyra Miller added eight points and also had four assists.  Kaya Mobley and Anaisah Malone also dished out four assists.

Sabria Mann pulled down nine rebounds  to go along with her seven points while Mobley and Adelekan chipped in six boards apiece.  Kourin Carew led the team with three steals.

The Lightning opened the game making three of their first four shots all from beyond the three point arc to take an early 9-4 lead.  The Griffins tightened up on defense  to hold the Lightning scoreless over the next four minutes while scoring 11 straight points to take a 15-9 lead.  After the Lighting battled back within two, 17-15 the Griffins followed with a 9-2 run with all nine points coming off three-point baskets from Tamoun.  GBC made a pair of free throws in the final seconds to make the score 26-19 heading into the second quarter.

The visitors cut the lead back to four in the first two minutes of the second quarter, 28-24 and Chestnut Hill followed with eight straight points starting with a Tamia Washington jumper and followed by six more points from Tamoun to lead 36-24.  The Lightning cut the lead down to single digits, but the Griffins exploded in the final three minutes with a 12-2 uprising, taking a 51-33 lead at halftime.

The Griffins added five more points to the lead in the third quarter and closed out the game holding the Lightning to just one fourth quarter field goal, outscoring GBC 21-3 in the final period.  This included a 13-0 run over the final seven minutes of the game.  Aryianna Sumpter (7 points)started that final run with a short jumper in the paint.  Tamoun scored her final two points with free throws and Carew added two free throws as well.  Bry Hicks (layup), Bryce Harvey-Carr (three-pointer) and Anahita Jackson (short jumper)  scored the final baskets for the Griffins to complete the scoring.

Chestnut Hill finished the game  shooting 46.5% from the field (33-71) while holding the Lightning to just 32.8% shooting (19-58).  The Griffins were a solid 85% (17-20)  from the free throw line.  Goldey-Beacom struggled from the charity stripe making just six of 17 free throws.  The Griffins held a 51-31 rebound advantage and committed just 13 turnovers to GBC's 18.

The women's basketball team returns to action on February 3, 2026 when they travel to face holy Family University in northeast Philadelphia.  Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
