Griffins Defeat Firebirds for Fifth Conference Win

The Chestnut Hill College Women's Tennis team took another step towards clinching a spot in the Central Atlantic collegiate Conference championship tournament with a 6-1 win over the University of the District of Columbia Thursday afternoon at the CHC Tennis Courts.

The Griffins improve to 7-3 overall and 5-3 in CACC contests.  The Firebirds drop to 3-6 overall and in league play.

Chestnut Hill remains in third place in the league standings one game ahead of Wilmington University, their opponent in tomorrow's match.  The top four teams in the league standing qualify for the conference tournament championship.

The Griffins needed just one win in doubles play as UDC fielded only five players and took a forfeit at #3 doubles.   The team of Elena Arenas Guisasola and Lilian Bandel earned a 6-4 win at #1 doubles over Polina Zelentsova and Yelzaveta Sylka to clinch the doubles point for the home squad.    Milica Zagorac and Veronika Lundgren completed the double sweep with a 7-6 (7-3) win over Mina Randjelovic and Nadia Zmukic at #2 doubles.

The Firebirds also took a forfeit at #6 singles to give the Griffins a 2-0 lead.  UDC got on the board with a win at #2 singles before Bandel gave the Griffins a 3-1 lead with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Iva Janketic at #4 singles.

The next two matches finished at practically the same time as Zagorac was a 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 winner over Zelentsova at #1 singles and Arenas Guisasola  won at #3 singles with an identical 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 score defeating Sylka.  Fabienne Lahn also pulled out a three-set win at #5 singles, defeating Zmukic  4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

The women's tennis team returns to action on Friday, October 2, 2026 with a key conference match against five-time defending conference champion Wilmington University.  First serve is at 12:00 p.m.
