The Chestnut Hill College baseball team opened their 2026 season on Friday as they faced D'Youville University in a doubleheader at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina as part of the annual Northeast Challenge. Chestnut Hill split the doubleheader winning the nightcap 7-3 while losing the opener 19-8.
Joseph Kelly earned the win in game two, pitching six innings and allowing all three runs by the Saints while striking out six.
The Griffins took control of the game early, scoring six times in the first inning. Wyatt Spinks led off the game with a triple to left field and scored on an error from the Saints' pitcher trying to pickoff Aiden Myers who had walked. Myers then scored on Michael Pascoe's single. Pascoe stole second and Nick Shiffler walked and both runners scored when Dylan Broderick's ground ball became a two-rbi infield error. Broderick then scored on Jackson Shellenberger's triple. Matthew Sharkey made the score 6-0 on a single, scoring Shellenberger.
D'Youville got a run back in the bottom of the first and the score remained 6-1 until the top half of the fifth when Shiffler laced a double to left field scoring Pascoe who singled. The Saints scored twice more in the bottom of the sixth, cutting the Griffins lead to 7-3.
Rich Bonino pitched the seventh inning, allowing two hits before shutting the door with two straight strikeouts.
In the opener, D'Youville scored nine runs in the third inning, chasing CHC starter Broderick who faced five batters in the third with retiring one as the Saints opened up a 12-1 lead at the time.
Broderick also drove in the Griffins first run with a single to center field, scoring Michael Melosky in the bottom half of the second.
D'Youville expanded their lead to 19-1 before the Griffins scored seven runs in their final at-bat in the ninth inning, making the final score 19-8. The Griffins loaded the bases with one out, bringing up Will Brennan as a pinch hitter who was hit with a pitch to bring in a run. Walks to Drew Nemeth Jr. and Pascoe brought home two more runs as the bases remained loaded. Brennan scored on a passed ball and Shiffler walked again loading the bases. Cameron Leach and Ryan McNichol drove in the final two runs with RBI singles.
The baseball team returns to action in Myrtle Beach on Saturday, taking on Saint Thomas Aquinas College. First pitch is at 2:30 p.m.
