Malcolm Day scored a career high 21 points and was joined in double figures by three Chestnut Hill teammates, but the Dominican University men's basketball team erased an eight-point halftime lead with a strong second half to defeat the Griffins 82-75 Saturday afternoon at the Hennessy Center in Orangeburg, New York.
The Griffins fall to 7-14 overall and 5-9 in Central Atlantic Collegiate conference games with the loss, their fourth straight. The Chargers improve to 9-13 overall and 6-8 in league play.
Day made five field goals (three three-pointers)and was a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line as he was led the Griffins with a career high 21 points. Amari Dow recorded a double-double with 14 points and ten rebounds. The redshirt freshman guard also added four assists and three steals.
Joining Day and Dow in double figures were Jeremiah Gorham with 12 points and Marshall Baker with ten. Gorham also had four steals.
The Griffins held 43-35 lead at halftime. The Chargers opened the second half with an 11-2 run over the first 4:17 to retake the lead 46-45. Day's putback put CHC back on top but a small 7-2 spurt from the Chargers put the DUNY on top by four 53-49 with 12:55 remaining. The Griffins would pull within one and then the Chargers would push their lead up to six midway through the period. Five minutes later the Griffins again would pull within one, 68-67 following six straight points. A 10-4 run by the Chargers increased their lead to seven with just under two minutes left and the Griffins clawed their way within three 78-75 following a Landon Shivers layup with 1:09 left. Dominican scored two baskets in the final seconds to round out the scoring.
In the first half, the Griffins scored the first ten points of the game highlighted by a pair of three-point baskets from Kamal Lee. The Chargers then scored the next 11 points to take an 11-10 lead. An 8-0 run by Chestnut Hill followed, starting with a basket from Alejandro Redondo Cybak and followed by six points from Day as the Griffins retook the lead 18-11. The Griffins' lead fluctuated between two and six points over the next five minutes before Gorham and Day hit back-to-back three point baskets to give Chestnut Hill an 11-point advantage, 36-25 with 4:17 left in the half. Cybak's layup with 1:59 left gave Chestnut Hill their largest lead of the game at 43-31 before the Chargers scored the last four points of the period cut CHC's lead to eight 43-35 at halftime.
For the game, the Chargers shot a solid 53.7% from the field (29-54) while the Griffins shot 41.0% (25-61). Chestnut Hill made seven three-point field goals, all in the first half (7-17) and finished the game at 7-20( 35%). DUNY was 5-13 (38.5%) for the game. Free throw shooting was essentially a wash, and the Chargers held a slim 35-34 rebound advantage. Dominican's bench outscored Chestnut Hill's 47-31 and the Chargers held a 40-24 advantage in the points in the paint category.
The men's basketball team returns to action on Wednesday, February 11, 2026 when the host Wilmington University at Sorgenti Arena. Tipoff is set for 8:00 p.m.
