Sara Tamoun sank four free throws in the final 25 seconds to secure a key road victory for the Chestnut Hill College women's Basketball team as they defeated Dominican University 66-58 Saturday afternoon at the Hennessy Center in Orangeburg, New York.
The Griffins improve to 12-10 overall and 9-5 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. The Chargers fall to 5-17 overall and 3-11 in league games. The Griffins are also 8-0 when allowing 65 or fewer points in a game.
Tamoun along with Kourin Carew led the Griffins with 13 points apiece. Anahita Jackson came off the bench to add 12 points (3 3FG, 3 FT). Tiayo Adelekan led all players with nine rebounds and four steals while Carew grabbed eight boards. Kaya Mobley dished out a game high five assists.
Momentum went back and forth throughout the contest with a total of 13 lead changes and ten ties and neither team holding a lead greater than two possessions until the final minute of play.
The last lead change came with three minutes remaining in the game when Sabria Mann converted a driving layup to give the Griffins a one-point lead 58-57. Chestnut Hill still held a one-possession lead 61-58 with two minutes left. Both teams went cold offensively until the Griffins got a steal from Adelekan and Tamoun was fouled with 25 seconds left. The senior guard, one of the best free throw shooters in the league at 86.6% promptly made both free throws to put the Griffins up by five 63-58. Following another defensive stop, Tamoun was fouled again with 13 seconds left and again made both free throw, essentially put the game out of reach with a seven-point lead 65-58. A free throw by Adelekan rounded out the scoring and the Griffins had an eight point win.
Chestnut Hill trailed by one at the half, 28-27 but outscored the Chargers 21-16 in the period to lead by four heading into the final period. Jackson made three three-point baskets and a pair of free throws in the third quarter, accounting for 11 of her 12 points in the game. Tamoun (six points) and Carew (four points) accounted for the remaining points in the quarter. The Griffins shot an efficient 57.1% in the period, making eight of 14 shots while holding the chargers to just four field goals (4-14, 28.1%)
Earlier in the game, the Griffins did hold a six point lead in the opening quarter, with the Chargers battling back with 11 straight points to lead by five before CHC rallied to tie the game at 13-13 following a Mann three-ball. The Griffins then went back up by five late in the second quarter following a traditional three point play from Tikyra Miller only to have the Chargers again with a 9-3 run to close out the first half with a 28-27 lead.
Ketura Ruddy led Dominican with 13 points while Tamia Nunes grabbed nine rebounds.
For the game, the Griffins shot 39.0% from the field (23-59) while holding the Chargers to just a 30.4% effort (17-56). CHC is 7-0 when holding teams under 35% shooting from the field. The Chargers were slightly more efficient from beyond the arc (37.5% (6-16) to 27.8% (5-18)) and the free throw line (18-26 (69.2%) to CHC's 65.2% (15-23)). The Griffins outrebounded the Chargers 45-36. Both teams committed exactly 20 turnovers.
The women's basketball team returns to action on Wednesday, February 11, 2026 when the host Wilmington University at Sorgenti Arena. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
