The Chestnut Hill College Women's Lacrosse team continued their solid play to start the season Wednesday afternoon, defeating Edinboro University 11-7 at Victory Field in Lafayette Hill.
The Griffins improve to 4-1 on the season with their win, their best five game start to a season since 2007. Edinboro falls to 1-4.
Elizabeth Deal and Samantha Martin led the Griffins with three goals apiece. For Deal it was her first career hat trick and Martin has now scored three or more goals in four of the Griffins' five games. Ryley Geary dished out four assists and scored a goal to finish with a game high five points. Chestnut Hill also got two goals from Kendall Gayton and one apiece from Carlee O'Donnell and Gen Washington-Vasquez.
Maddie Brazukas led the team with three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Gayton and Deal won four draw controls apiece. Mel Amador had seven saves in goal for the Griffins.
The Griffins never trailed in the contest as Washington-Vasquez and Geary gave the Griffins an early 2-0 lead five minutes into the game. Geary assisted on Washington-Vasquez's goal and Washington-Vasquez assisted on Geary's.Â
The Fighting Scots tied the game by quarter's end before the Griffins scored the first four goals of the second quarter to take a 6-2 lead with 3:21 left in the quarter. Deal took a pass from Gayton and parked a shot in the back of the net at the 10:36 mark to give the Griffins a 3-2 lead. Gayton followed with a free-position goal at the 7:10 mark. Martin added a man-up goal at the 5:42 mark and O'Donnell scored off a free-position shot at the 3:21 mark.
Edinboro scored twice in the final 1:33 to pull within 6-4 at halftime.Â
Gayton tallied her second goal of the game to open the third quarter scoring with Martin connecting on two man-up opportunities as the quarter wore on, giving her three man-up goals on the afternoon and staking her team to a 9-4 lead heading into the final period.
The seventy seconds of the fourth quarter saw Edinboro score twice to cut the lead to 9-6.  Deal added her second goal at the 11:46 mark and completed her hat trick with 7:47 left to round out the scoring. Geary assisted on both scores.
For the game, the Griffins were a perfect 16-16 on clears while the Fighting Scots converted 12 of 14 clear attempts.  Chestnut Hill won the draw control battle, 11-8 and committed two fewer turnovers (12-14.). Both teams took 25 shots with the Griffins holding a 17-14 advantage on goal. The Griffins also had two more ground balls 13-11.
The women's lacrosse team opens conference play on Saturday when they travel to face defending CACC champion Dominican University in Orangeburg, New York.  First draw is set for 12:00 p.m.
