Wyatt Spinks drove in five runs as the Chestnut Hill College Baseball team defeated Jefferson University 10-7 in the second game of their doubleheader against the Rams, salving a split of the two games Wednesday afternoon at Hostelley Field in north Wales, Pennsylvania.
Jefferson had won the first game 16-5. The Griffins are now 8-11 overall and 5-6 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. The Rams are now 7-11 overall and 6-5 in league play.
Spinks had two hits in the nightcap, a two run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning which tied the game at 6-6Â and a bases-clearing three-run double which broke a 7-7 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Nicholas Shiffler also hit a home run, a two-run blast in the bottom of the second inning. Rich Bonino got the win, pitching g the final 3.2 innings, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out five to improve to 3-0 on the season. Starter Mason Adkins went 3.1 innings, allowing six runs on five hits.
The Rams jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on Andrew Holub's three run home run. Shiffler put the Griffins on the board in the second inning with his two-run shot to cut the lead to 3-2 . Jefferson added three more runs in the top half of the fourth before the Griffins rallied to tie the score in the bottom half of the inning.
Matthew Sharkey doubled to lead off the inning, and Dylan Broderick drew a one-out walk. Angus Moore hit into a fielder's choice as Sharkey then scored on a throwing error. Kenyon Motley followed with a double to score Moore who had advanced into scoring position with a steal of second base. Spink then took an 0-1 pitch from Rams' starter Jake Baumann and put it over the left field fence to tie the game at 6-6.
Holub's second home run of the game put the Rams back on top 7-6 in the top half of the fifth. A walk and two errors brought home the tying run for the Griffins. Motley then walked to load the bases before Spinks delivered a double down the left field line to clear the bases and give the Griffins a 10-7 lead.
The Rams threatened in the sixth putting two runners in scoring position with two out before Bonino induced a strikeout to end the threat. Bonino then retired the Rams in order in the seventh to secure the win.
In the opener, Chestnut Hill's pitching struggled as they gave up 13 walks as the Rams scored 16 runs off just eight hits to beat the Griffins 16-5. Broderick took the loss facing just eight batters in the first inning and allowing the first four runs (three earned).
The Griffins trailed 6-0 when they got their first run on the board as Jackson Shollenberger scored on a failed double steal attempt. Shollenberger drove in the Griffins' second run in the bottom half of the fourth, making the score 12-2.Â
Moore doubled home Sharkey in the fifth and Spinks singled to score Moore to pull the Griffins within nine, 13-4. Will Brennan drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth to score Luke Sosa with the final run of the game.
The baseball team resumes conference play on Saturday with a doubleheader at Hostelley Field against Lincoln University. First pitch is set for noon.
