Griffins Fall to Cardinals in First Road Game of Season

The Chestnut Hill College Women's Lacrosse team dropped a road contest Tuesday afternoon at Wheeling University, losing to the Cardinals 16-9.

The Griffins fall to 1-1 on the season while the Cardinals improve to 1-3.

Molly Miller scored four goals to pace the Griffins with all four goals coming when the Griffins were a man-up.  Miller becomes just the fourth player in program history to score four or more man-up goals in a single game. Elizabeth Deal added two goals while Genevieve Washington-Vasquez, Ryley Geary and Samatha Martin tallied one goal apiece.  All nine of the Griffins goals were unassisted. 

Martin along with goalkeeper Mel Amador led the team with four ground balls apiece.  Deal and Miller added three each.  Deal also led the team with two caused turnovers while Miller won six draw controls.  Amador had ten saves in goal.

Wheeling scored the first three goals until Miller tallied her first goal of the game with 7:42 left in the opening period.  Deal scored her first goal with less than a minute left to make the score 4-2 heading into the second period.

A goal by Wheeling's Jovie Noack opened the second period before chestnut Hill strung three straight goals to tie the game at 5-5.  Deal scored a man-up goal with 9:03 left and Washington-Vasquez followed with her first career goal at the 7:58 mark.  Miller notched her second goal of the game with 3:09 left.   Noack scored again for the cardinals with under a minute left, giving the hosts a 6-5 lead at halftime.

Wheeling opened the scoring in the third quarter and Martin again pulled the Griffins within one with a goal at the 12:34 mark.  Miller's third goal at 9:16 on the clock tied the game at 7-7. The Cardinals scored two straight goals to break the tie and take a 9-7 lead.  Geary brought the Griffins back within one with 2:28 left before Wheeling scored once more before the end of the period to make the score 10-8.

Miller tallied her final goal of the game just 28 seconds in the fourth quarter to close the gap to one.  Wheeling however scored six straight times including three in the final two minutes to finish with a 16-9 win.

The women's lacrosse team returns to action on Saturday, March 7, 2026 when they travel to take on Virginia State University in Petersburg, Virginia.  First draw is set for 1:00 p.m.
