Martin's Goal in Double Overtime Lifts Griffins to Win

Samantha Martin 's goal with 31 seconds left in the second overtime lifted the Chestnut Hill College Women's Lacrosse team to a 13-12 win over host Virginia State University Saturday afternoon in Ettrick, Virginia.

The Griffins improve to 2-1 with the win.  The Trojans fall to 1-3.  The double overtime game was the Griffins first since the 2015 season and their first double overtime win since defeating Post University in double overtime in 2013.

Martin finished the game with four goals and an assist while Molly Miller had her second consecutive game with at least three goals, notching three on the afternoon.  Elizabeth Deal and Ryley Geary each contributed two goals and an assist.

Miller led the team with three caused turnovers while Deal and Maya Zullo had two apiece.  Carlee O'Donnell had five ground balls while Deal won seven draw controls.  Mel Amador earned the win in goal while recording five saves.

Virginia State had tied the game at 12-12 with two goals in the final 65 seconds of regulation.  The Griffins got the only shot off in the first overtime while the Trojans came close twice in the second, the first hitting off the crossbar and a second saved by Amador.  After a wide shot by VSU  the Griffins cleared the ball and held it for the last shot as Martin found the back of the net to get the game winner with just 31 ticks left on the clock.

The Trojans held leads of 6-2 and 7-3 before the Griffins staged a comeback in final four minutes of the second quarter and early minutes of the third, scoring four straight goals to tie the game at 7-7.  Genevieve Washington Vasquez started the rally at the 4:04 mark with an unassisted goal.  Miller and Deal followed with goals within a 16 second span as the half came to a close.  Martin then scored her second goal of the game at the 13:38 mark of the third quarter to even the score at 7-7.

After a VSU goal the Griffins scored three straight to take a 10-8 lead as Geary, Miller and Allyson Smith scored to round out the third quarter scoring.   The Trojans rallied to tie but Geary and Martin added man-up goals which gave the Griffins a 12-10 lead with 2:12 left in regulation before VSU tied the game.  Miller had a shot on goal with 12 seconds left but it was saved by the Trojan goalkeeper.

The women's lacrosse team returns to action on Wednesday, March 11, 2026 when they host Eastern University at victory Field.  First draw is at 7:00 p.m.
