The Chestnut Hill College Baseball team opened their four game North Carolina trip on Thursday, falling to Mansfield University 4-1 in Goldsboro, North Carolina.
The Griffins fall to 2-3 with the loss.
Joe Kelly (1-1) took the loss for the Griffins, pitching three innings and giving up three runs on six hits while striking out two. Jackson Shollenberger hit his second home run of the season for the Griffins to account for their only run of the game.
The Mountaineers scored twice in the first inning off Kahale Burns' two-run home run. MU's Michael Palmer added a home run leading off the second inning to make the score 3-0.
Chestnut Hill threatened in the bottom half of the third as Bobby Sabatino singled, was sacrificed to second and Wyatt Spinks walked. Both runners stole bases before Aiden Myers loaded them up when he was hit by a pitch. Mansfield pitcher Quinn Sandler then retired the next two Griffins to end the threat.
Shollenberger led off the fourth inning with a home run, taking a 1-0 pitch and blasting it over the centerfield fence, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
Mansfield added an insurance run in the fifth inning to lead 4-1. The Griffins struggled to get baserunners the rest of the way until their final at-bat. Michael Pascoe singled to lead off the ninth and Shollenberger walked to put two runners on with one out. Mansfield reliever Matt Rader then retired the next two batters to end the game.
Sandler earned the win for the Mountaineers, pitching eight innings of one-run ball while striking out ten. Rader earned the save.
The baseball team returns to action on Friday, March 6, 2026 with two games in Goldsboro. The Griffins start the day with a 10:00 a.m. game against Clarion University and later play Mansfield at 4:00 p.m.
