Griffins Split Two Games on Day Two of their North Carolina Trip

The Chestnut Hill College baseball team continued their North Carolina trip on Friday with a pair of games, taking on Clarion University in the morning and Mansfield university later in the day in Goldsboro, North Carolina.

The Griffins came away with a 6-5 win over the Mountaineers in the late game while falling to Clarion 16-1 in the morning game.

Chestnut Hill is now 3-4 with the split of the two games.

Mason Adkins pitched 5.2 innings vs. Mansfield to earn the win.  He allowed two earned runs on three hits while striking out five.  Rich Bonino pitched the final 3.1 innings to earn his first save of the season.

Seven different Griffins recorded hits with Wyatt Spinks getting two singles.  Michael Pascoe hit a two-run home run and Michael Melosky had a double in two at-bats.

Spinks scored the Griffins first run on a failed double steal attempt with Pascoe who was thrown out trying to steal in the first inning.  Matthew Sharkey's RBI single in the second inning made the score 2-0.

Pascoe's two-run home run in the third inning increased the Griffins lead to 4-0 and Nicholas Shiffler hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth to make the score 5-0.

Mansfield got one run back in the bottom half of the fifth and added two more in the sixth to cut the Griffins lead to 5-3.

Aiden Myers singled to lead off the seventh inning and later scored on a throwing error by the Mountaineers catcher as Kenyon Motley was stealing second, giving the Griffins a 6-3 lead.

The Mountaineers scored twice more in the eighth to pull within one 6-5.  Bonino gave up a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth  and then retired the last three Mansfield batters to preserve the win.

In the morning game, Clarion scored in six of the eight innings they batted as they tagged the Griffins pitching staff for 16 runs on 16 hits en route to a 16-1 win.

Pascoe started and pitched four innings, giving up six earned runs on eight hits.  He also had one of the Griffins two hits in the contest, an RBI single in the fourth inning.  Shiffler had the other hit, a leadoff single in the second inning.

The Griffins baseball team returns to action on Saturday with another game against Clarion University in Goldsboro, North Carolina.
