Westervelt Nets Hat Trick as Griffins Keep Playoff Hopes Alive with Win over Eagles

Bryce Westervelt recorded her first collegiate hat-trick as the Chestnut Hill College women's lacrosse team rallied from a three-goal deficit and kept their playoff hopes alive as the defeated Post University 12-10 Saturday afternoon at LaMoy Field in Waterbury, Connecticut.

The Griffins improve to 7-6 overall and 3-5 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games.  Chestnut Hill currently sits in sixth place with one game remaining.  The top six teams qualify for the CACC Championship Tournament. Post falls to 2-6 overall and 1-6 in league play.

Westervelt had three goals and added an assist for four points on the afternoon.  Teammates Samantha Martin (three goals, 1 assist) and Kendall Gayton (two goals, two assists)  also had four points on the afternoon.  Carlee O'Donnell also scored twice in the game.

Maddie Brazukas had four ground balls and four caused turnovers in the game. Westervelt had three ground balls, two caused turnovers and won two draw controls.  Martin led the team with three draw control wins.

Mel Amador had 13 saves in goal and moved into second on the CACC's all-time women's lacrosse goalie saves list with 637.  She also ad four ground balls in the game. 

The Eagles took the early advantage scoring twice in the first six minutes to lead 2-0.  Chestnut Hill followed with three straight goals to take their first lead of the game O'Donnell to a pass from Gayton at the 5:45 mark to get the Griffins on the board, while Westervelt fed Martin for the tying goal a minute later.  Martin then assisted on Nicole George's goal with 1:09 left to round out the first quarter scoring. 

Four straight goals in the second quarter saw the Griffins fall behind by thee, 6-3.  Gayton's goal with seven minutes left closed the gap to 6-4 but the Eagles tallied a goal at the 5:18 mark to again lead by three, 7-4.

The Griffins stayed strong through, coming back with two goals before halftime to pull within one 7-6.  Gayton tallied her second goal with Ryley Geary assisting and Westervelt scoring a man-up goal with Elizabeth Deal tallying the assist with 1:49 left in the half.

The early portion of the third quarter was all Chestnut Hill, scoring three straight times for a 9-7 lead.  Deal had a man-up goal at the 13:02 mark while Westervelt had a man-down goal less than two minutes later.  O'Donnell then scored her second of the game at the 9:17 mark with Geary assisting.  Post rallied to tie the game at 9-9 while Westervelt had other ideas, scoring on a free-position shot with 15 seconds left in the quarter to give CHC a 10-9 advantage heading into the final period. 

Martin scored the Griffins' only two goals in the final period with her second of the period and third of the game coming with 6:06 left and rounding out the scoring. Post had just two shots the rest of the way, one sailing high and the other on goal and saved by Amador.

The women's lacrosse team will close out the regular season with a game at Felician University in  Rutherford, New Jersey on Saturday, April 25, 2026.  First draw is at noon.
