A record setting game evolved into a doubleheader sweep for the Chestnut Hill College baseball team as they defeated Felician 30-7 and 7-6 Thursday afternoon at Hostelley Field in North Wales.
The 30 runs scored broke the school record of 25 set back in 2016 against Lincoln University. Fifteen of those runs came in the sixth inning, also a school record for most runs in an inning. The 30 runs are also the most scored by a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference school in a game this season
With the doubleheader sweep the Griffins improve to 13-12 overall and 10-7 in CACC games. The Golden Falcons, who ranked #5 in the most recent National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) poll, fall to 17-14 overall and 9-8 in league play. The sweep also marked the first time the Griffins ever swept a doubleheader from the Golden Falcons playing on their home field and only the second time in program history that the Griffins swept a doubleheader against Felician at any location (2015 in Rutherford, N.J.)
Jackson Shollenberger recorded six RBI, three from a home run in the sixth inning. Aiden Myers had three of the Griffins' 14 hits while recording four RBI. Michael Pascoe also hit a home run and had four RBI. He also became the eighth player in program history to draw four walks in a single game and the first since 2022. Kenyon Motley and Matthew Sharkey had three RBI apiece. All nine Griffins in the lineup had at least one hit.
Luke Scheweiker earned the complete game win, tossing seven innings and allowing seven runs on ten hits while striking out ten.
The scoring onslaught began in the first inning when the Griffins sent 14 batters to the plate.  The first three batters reached base safely and Myers brought home Motley with an RBI single to tie the game at 1-1. Shollenberger was hit by a pitch to bring home another run and Nick Shiffler singled home the third run. A wild pitch and a single from Michael Melosky scored two more runs and the Griffins had a 5-1 lead. Anthony Jakeman drove in two more to make the score 7-1 and the Griffins still had not made an out.
Sharkey reached on a fielder's choice to score the eighth CHC run and Myers had his second hit of the inning to bring home another run. Shollenberger then delivered a two-out two RBI single to make the score 11-1.
Shollenberger's three run home run to centerfield increased the Griffins score to 15-3. Felician added  runs in the fourth and fifth inning to pull within ten 15-5.Â
The sixth inning saw the Griffins score a record 15 runs while batting around twice in the inning.  A wild pitch, four walks, a hit batter and a Golden Falcon fielding error  produced six runs. Anthony Letizia then blasted a double to centerfield to drive in two more, making the score 23-5.   Angus Moore was hit by a pitch and Motley reached on a fielder's choice, which eventually scored two more runs. Two batters later Pascoe hit a 3-2 pitch over the right field fence to complete the 15-run inning and give the Griffins a 30-5 lead.
Felician's Bryce Curry hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning to round out the scoring.
In the nightcap, the Griffins rallied from a 6-3 deficit in the fifth inning as they held on to win 7-6 and complete the sweep.Â
Pascoe and Shollenberger hit home runs with Letizia and Shollenberger driving in two runs apiece. Brady Gusttitus pitched four innings in relief of starter Noah Tincher, allowing one unearned run to earn his first win of the season. Rich Bonino pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning to earn his third save of the season. Â
Motley and Sharkey led off the first inning with back-to-back doubles to plate the first Griffins run. Shollenberger then hit his second home run in as many games, scoring Sharkey and giving the Griffins a 3-0 lead.
Felician scored five runs on four hits in their half of the second inning to lead 5-3. The big blow came off the bat of Jose Medrano who delivered a two out bases loaded double, clearing the bases. Bryce Curry doubled to score Medrano and one inning later delivered an RBI single to make the score 6-3.
Pascoe started the Griffins' comeback in the fifth inning with a home run that cleared the right field fence to make the score 6-4. Dylan Broderick added an RBI single to cut the deficit to one.  Melosky singled to put two runners on for Letizia who worked the count to 3-2 before driving a pitch into center field to clear the bases and give the Griffins a 7-6 lead.
Felician put runners on first and third in the sixth before Gusttitus got Curry to hit a hard grounder to Pascoe at third base who then three the batter out at first to end the threat. Bonino entered the game in the seventh inning and retired the Golden Falcons in order to preserve the win.
The baseball team returns to action to complete the three gamer series with the Golden Falcons, traveling to Rutherford, New Jersey on Saturday, April 4. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
