Griffins Sweep Opening Week of CACC Men’s Lacrosse Awards
New Haven, Conn. - (2/17/2020) – Chestnut Hill College opened the 2020 season with much fanfare as the Griffins disposed of the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) by a 27-11 in Saturday’s (February 15) meeting. Several Griffins enjoyed several noteworthy performances as the Scarlet and Gold swept the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men’s Lacrosse Weekly Awards. Junior attack Maurice Kelly (Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta) garnered the CACC Player of the Week award with nine points (4 goals, 5 assists) and two ground balls in his Griffin debut. Meanwhile, sophomore Jake Miller (Castle Rock, Colo.) (26:40 minutes) totaled nine saves and three ground balls in his first game as a member of the Scarlet and Gold en route to the CACC Rookie and Goalkeeper of the Week titles. Senior defenseman Jordan Jeznach (Reading, Pa.) was named the CACC Defensive Player of the Week after reporting an assist, four ground balls, and three caused turnovers in the victory.
Chestnut Hill College (1-0) came out firing in its first game of 2020, setting the program record for most goals scored in a single game, in a 27-11 victory over UDC (1-1). The Griffins started the game strong, running out to a 7-3 lead in the first quarter. It started to get out of hand as play moved to second quarter. There, the Griffins used a 7-0 run to hit an 11-goal, 17-6, halftime lead. Picking up right where they left off, Chestnut Hill College scored the first seven goals of the second half to reach their largest lead of the game; 24-6 (3:20, 3QTR), before cruising to the finish line in a 27-11 (0:58, 4QTR) final.
Chestnut Hill College only outshot UDC by a 50-40 margin as the real difference came in between the pipes. The Griffin trio of net minders – senior Mike Trezza (Forked River, N.J.), senior Stephen Hogan Jr. (Doylestown, Pa.), and Miller – tallied 17 saves; Miller recorded nine of them in his 26:40 minutes. The Scarlet and Gold also featured 11 different goal scorers and four players with three goals or more. Junior attacker Carson Rees (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) recorded a game-high five goals, but Kelly tallied a game-high nine points with four goals and five assists. Jeznach caused three of the Firebirds 19 turnovers.
