Rees Scores Third CACC Men’s Lacrosse Player of the Week, Lopuzzo Named Defensive Player, Miller Merits Honor Roll
New Haven, Conn. - (3/17/2020) – Chestnut Hill College earned its third straight win and improved their record to 5-1 with this Wednesday (March 11) night’s 18-9 decision over Molloy College. The Griffins jumped ahead of the Lions early and used a nine-point outing (6 goals, 3 assists) from junior attack Carson Rees (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) to continue their success in non-conference play. He had plenty of help as junior Stephen Lopuzzo (Ringoes, N.J.) and freshman goalkeeper Jake Miller (Castle Rock, Colo.) joined him on the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men’s Lacrosse Weekly Report as the Defensive Player of the Week and an Honor Roll mention. Rees collected his third CACC Player of the Week award with his performance; he finishes the season as the national (NCAA DII), CACC, and Scarlet and Gold leader in goals (33), goals-per-game (5.50), points (46), and points-per-game (7.67).
Chestnut Hill College (5-1) opened each of the first two quarters with four-goal runs, the result was a 10-6 halftime lead over Molloy College (1-6). Both Rees and classmate Scott Wilden (Wexford, Pa.) went into the break with three goals apiece, while Lopuzzo won 10-of-16 (.625) faceoffs. He won 16-of-29 (.552) overall, hustled to six ground balls, and caused a turnover by the end of the contest. The Griffins continued to roll in the second half, using a 3-0 opening run and a 5-1 fourth-quarter spread to expand their cushion in a nine-point, 18-9 victory.
Miller (57:55) was the seal on the Scarlet and Gold goal, recording his second 20-plus save performance on the season in the victory (4-1). He recorded 22 saves in all and recovered a ground ball before handing the net over to senior Mike Trezza (Forked River, N.J.) for the final two minutes (2:05).
Rees added five ground balls to his nine points. He has recorded at least three goals and at least five points in each of the Griffins’ six games this season. Rees has been extremely efficient in doing so, racking up his 33 goals at a 51.6% clip (33 goals on 64 shots; .516 shooting percentage). He added 13 assists to his scores for a total of 46 points, to which he has added 15 ground balls and a caused turnover.
