Dennis and Owens Harvest CACC Honorable Mentions
New Haven, Conn. – (10/11/2012) – Junior Kelly Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio) and freshmen Axe Owens (Trenton, N.J.) were recognized for their part in a 7-0 win over Holy Family University on Wednesday, October 3, as they each earned an honorable mention on the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women’s Tennis Weekly Report. Dennis won at number two singles and number one doubles while Owens earned wins at number five singles and number three doubles to lead the Griffins to victory in the daylight shortened match.
Darkness ended number one and number six singles before completion, but with a sweep of the remaining matches Chestnut Hill College (8-2, 6-2) defeated Holy Family University 7-0. The Griffin lineup was led by Dennis and Owens, who earned wins in both singles and doubles play. Dennis was the first Griffin to win an individual match as she triumphed at number two singles 6-2, 6-0, while Owens was the winner at number five singles 6-0, 6-1. Earlier in the match, Dennis teamed with senior Anastasiya Shcherbakova (Belarus, Minsk) for an 8-5 win at number one doubles while Owens and Iman Williams-Mulesa (Pickering, Ontario) won number three doubles 9-7.
The women’s tennis team joins the men to host back-to-back dual matches on Friday, October 12, and Saturday, October 13, as the Griffins welcome West Chester University and Adelphi University to campus. The Griffins take on the Golden Rams at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow, and will square-off against the Panthers at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
