Vassalluzzo Scores CACC Player of the Week Award, Haag Appears on Weekly Honor Roll
Â
New Haven, Conn. - (3/31/2021) – Junior Gianna Vassalluzzo (Newtown, Pa.) provided the match-winning point in Chestnut Hill College’s recent 5-2 victory over Thomas Jefferson University with her a 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 6-3, win at number six singles. She and freshman Nele Haag (Tauberbischofsheim, Germany) both contributed to a pair of Griffin points in the match and therefore, respectively earned recognition as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Player of the Week and a Weekly Honor Roll honoree.
Â
Vassalluzzo and sophomore Carlota Garcia Arguelles (Madrid, Spain) were the first to finish their doubles match as they took the number three doubles by a 6-1 measure. Thomas Jefferson University (2-2, 1-2) hoped to steal the team point with their 6-4 win at number two doubles, but Chestnut Hill College (1-4, 1-2) prevailed thanks to a 7-5 number-one doubles win from Haag and fellow freshman Alani Naje Connor (Mount Vernon, N.Y.).
Â
In singles, the Scarlet and Gold added to their 1-0 lead with wins in the first (6-0, retired) and second (6-0, 6-4) singles flights; Garcia Arguelles and Haag respectively scored the Griffin points, 3-0. Unfortunately, the Chestnut Hill College victory was delayed with Jefferson wins in the fourth (6-3, 6-2) and fifth (6-2, 4-6, 6-1) singles requiring Vassalluzzo’s match-clinching win in the sixth flight. The match concluded with Haag taking number three singles, 0-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Â
Chestnut Hill College continues their CACC schedule on Saturday, April 10, when they host Concordia College (NY) in a 12:00 p.m. match.
