Garcia Arguelles Garners CACC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week Honors
New Haven, Conn. - (4/20/2021) – Sophomore Carlota Garcia Arguelles (Madrid, Spain) was 5-1 during Chestnut Hill College’s recent 3-0 showing versus the University of the Sciences (USciences) (W, 4-3 on April 12), Thomas Jefferson University (Jefferson) (W, 5-2 on April 13), and Dominican College (W, 6-1 on April 15) to capture the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women’s Tennis Player of the Week award. She won all three of her number one singles matches and earned a pair of doubles wins alongside junior Gianna Vassalluzzo (Newtown, Pa.).
After taking the doubles point with victories in the second (6-3) and first (6-4) flights on Monday (April 12), Chestnut Hill College (4-5, 4-3) followed through on their CACC victory over the USciences with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, number-two singles from freshman Nele Haag (Tauberbischofsheim, Germany). Garcia Arguelles and freshman Annika Wise also recorded singles points in the 4-3 win over the Devils, respectively winning the first (7-5, 6-3) and third (4-6, 6-3, 6-2) individual flights.
Chestnut Hill College scored their second CACC win in as many days with Tuesday (April 13) evening's 5-2 triumph at Jefferson (4-3, 2-3). The Rams took the upper hand with a 6-4 victory in the top team flight. But, the Griffins came back to claim the doubles point with a 7-6 number three doubles win from Vassalluzzo and Garcia Arguelles and a 7-5 number two doubles. Jefferson tied the match at the start of singles play with their 6-1, 6-0, win at number two singles. However, the Griffins answered again. This time, freshman Alani Naje Connor (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.), Vassalluzzo, and Wise delivered the necessary scores individually with their respective wins in the fifth (7-5, 6-3), sixth (6-4, 6-4), and third (7-5, 6-4) flights, 4-1. The final two points were split as Jefferson took the fourth flight 6-1, 6-7 (3), 6-3, before Garcia Arguelles finished off the match with her 1-6, 7-5, 7-5, number one singles win.
Moved to Magarity Tennis Club of Flourtown, Pennsylvania, Thursday’s (April 15) CACC match served as another crucial league victory for Chestnut Hill College. Chestnut Hill College opened the match with their 6-1 win at number two doubles. Dominican College (0-5, 0-5) evened the playing field with a 6-4 win in the first team flight, but Chestnut Hill College (4-5, 4-3) successfully captured the team point with Garcia Arguelles and Vassalluzzo posting a 6-2 win in the third team flight, 1-0. In singles, the Griffins automatically extended their lead to 2-0 with a default win in the second flight. Soon after freshman Annika Wise and Garcia Arguelles provided the necessary Scarlet and Gold wins to take the match. Wise won the number three singles 6-3, 6-1, and Garcia Arguelles took number one singles 6-4, 6-2; 4-0.
Chestnut Hill College finished the 2020-2021 regular season with a 4-5 overall record and a 4-3 CAC standing. They will serve as the #2 seed in the upcoming 2021 Spring CACC Women’s Tennis Championship Tournament and therefore, will host #3 USciences in a 2:30 p.m. semifinal match on Friday, April 23.
