O’Leary’s Five Goals Garner CACC’s Weekly Rookie Award
New Haven, Conn. - (3/17/2014) – Freshman midfielder
Kelsey Moran (East Meadow, N.Y.) totaled five goals in last week’s competitions to garner the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Rookie of the Week award. O’Leary recorded her second career hat trick in the Griffins CACC loss to Philadelphia University and supported her weekly scoring effort with two ground balls, four draws, and a caused turnover.
Unfortunately, the 2014 CACC opener up belonged to Philadelphia University as the Lady Rams raced ahead of Chestnut Hill College (0-5, 0-1) for a 19-6 win. O'Leary put three shots to the back of the net for the Griffins, but the Lady Rams six-goal opening run, 6-0, laid the ground work for the visitors to lead 11-2 at intermission and 19-6 by game’s end. She also recorded a ground ball.
Molloy College was first on the scoreboard on Saturday, March 15, but the Griffins quickly seized the momentum with O’Leary, sophomore
Emorie Keimig (Freeland, Md.), and freshman midfielder
Lea Sanders (North Merrick, N.Y.) depositing the contest’s next three tallies, 3-1 (15:08). But the next two scores came from the Lions crosses and knotted the contest at 3-3 a little more than three minutes later (11:48). A goal from freshman midfielder
Alicia Herbert (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.) briefly gave the Griffins a 4-3 lead, unfortunately, four straight Lion scores led the visitor to a 7-5 halftime spread. The Lions continued to extend their advantage in the second half, netting seven consecutive goals en route to a 14-5 edge. The Griffins mustered a late rally with Keimig and Sanders scoring back-to-back at 11:47, 14-6, and 11:24, 14-7, respectively, but the effort was soon silenced with the Lions outscoring the home team 3-1 to the final buzzer, 17-8.
The women’s lacrosse team plays next on Tuesday, March 18, when they host the University of Bridgeport in a 4:00 p.m. contest.
