Oechsle and Hills Garner CACC Honor Roll Recognition

New Haven, Conn. – (10/22/2014) – For the second time this fall, senior Morgan Oechsle (Coopersburg, Pa.) and freshman Hannah Hills (Maize, Kan.) have earned Honor Roll recognition on the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Weekly Women’s Tennis Report.

On Friday, October 17, the University of the Sciences (USciences) (9-4, 2-4) gave Chestnut Hill College (7-3, 6-2) little resistance as the Griffins rolled through doubles play with respective 8-0, 8-1, and 8-1 victories in the three team matches. Hills and junior Hayley Craskey (Aston, Pa.) were the first to finish off the Devils with their 8-1 win at number three doubles. Juniors, Iman Williams-Mulesa (Pickering, Ontario) and Axe Owens (Trenton, N.J.) then earned the Griffins second point at number two doubles before seniors, Charlotte Dawson (Odessa, Texas) and Oechsle ended the round with their number-one singles triumph.

Singles went just as smoothly for the Griffins who conquered the bottom three singles matches before claiming the top three individual matches. Craskey was the first to finish her day, winning number five singles 6-0, 6-0. Soon after, Hills won at number six singles, 6-0, 6-0, and Owens followed with her 6-2, 6-0, victory at number four singles. Then, at number three singles Oechsle turned in a 6-0, 6-1, before the top two individual flights ended in order; Dawson winning 6-0, 6-0, at number one singles and Williams-Mulesa triumphing at number two singles, 6-1, 6-1.

Amidst a busy day on campus on Saturday, October 18, the Griffins concluded their CACC schedule with a morning match against Concordia College (NY). The Griffins got a head start on the Clippers, winning number three doubles by default and number two doubles on the effort of Williams-Mulesa and Owens, before succumbing to the Clipper competition as individuals, 5-4.

Short-handed, Concordia College (NY) (7-0, 7-0) forfeited points to the Griffins at number three doubles and number six singles. The Griffins added to their 1-0 advantage with Owens and Williams-Mulesa taking the second team flight by an 8-2 spread, 2-0. But, the Clippers broke up the sweep with an 8-1 win at number one doubles, 2-1.

The Griffins owned a 3-1 lead after the default win at number six singles. Unfortunately, Oechsle was the only Griffins to play for an individual victory as the Clippers won four out of five singles flights to earn a 5-4 league-win. They won the top singles flight 6-3, 6-3, and the second singles flight 6-2, 6-0; the fourth singles fight 7-5, 6-4, and number five singles 6-0, 6-2. Oechsle was triumphant at number three singles 6-2, 6-0.

The women’s tennis team now awaits competition in the CACC Championship Tournament, which they will host as the #3 seed on Saturday and Sunday, October 25 and 26, at the College Tennis Courts.
