Women’s Lacrosse Trio Leads Way in Busy Opening Week

New Haven, Conn. - (3/16/2015) – After their first four scheduled contests were postponed due to inclement weather, the Chestnut Hill College women’s lacrosse team was busy last week, playing three times in a span of five days. Several Griffins offered impressive performances over their 2-1 stretch and merited inclusion on the latest Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Weekly Report. Senior defender Alexis Puhl (Philadelphia, Pa.) was named the league’s Defensive Player of the Week on the strength of an aggregate total of six caused turnovers and eight ground balls. Freshman midfielder Hunter Leckonby (Charleston, S.C.) made the Honor Roll after leading the Griffins in goals (7) and points (8), and sophomore midfielder Jacklyn O'Leary joined her thanks to a team-leading three assists and five goals.

Though visiting Kutztown University made Saturday, March 14’s non-conference game interesting with a second-half rally, a red-hot start was more than enough to keep Chestnut Hill College (2-1) in the driver's seat until the horn sounded on a 9-7 victory on another rainy affair at Victory Field #1. The Griffins scored on each of their first six shots – half of them on the stick of Leckonby – in winning back-to-back home games for the first time since 2011. O’Leary tallied three goals for her first hat-trick of the season and also added an assist for a four-point effort. She scored on all three of her shots and added a pair of ground balls to her sixth career hat-trick. Puhl, meanwhile, was all over the field, picking up five ground balls in addition to two draw controls and a career-high five caused turnovers, the most by a Griffin since 2012.

A connection between freshmen midfielders Erica McLaughlin (Magnolia, N.J.) and Leckonby brought East Stroudsburg University's (2-0) first-half run to an end with just 28 seconds (0:28) remaining in the period, 9-1, on Thursday, March 12. But the tally was not enough to sway the Warriors first-half momentum as the home team proceeded to record the first four goals for the second half to own a 13-1 lead with 22:11 left to play in the game. Chestnut Hill College interrupted the second streak about four minutes later (18:35) when freshman attack Gillian Wixted (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored her first collegiate goal off the feed from O’Leary, 13-2, but the Warriors outscored them 4-1 in the final 16 minutes to facilitate the deciding 14-goal deficit, 17-3. O’Leary handed out an assist and added two draw controls.

The Griffins finally got the 2015 campaign underway when Queens College (N.Y.) invaded Victory Field #1 on Tuesday, March 10. Though the rain stuck around for another day, it was a second-half deluge that powered the Griffins all the way back from a six-goal, second-half deficit to an 11-10 victory in a soggy season opener. O’Leary assisted on the tying goal and netted the game-winner herself with 1:33 remaining to hand Chestnut Hill College its first triumphant season opener in at least a decade. Chestnut Hill College found itself trailing 9-3 on a Knights goal at 26:48, but would not be denied after that. The Griffins scored six unanswered goals on a tiring Queens College squad, starting the rally with a strike by sophomore midfielder Rachel Perry (Gilbertsville, Pa.), 9-4 (26:03). Leckonby delivered the next three markers, scoring back-to-back goals before setting up sophomore midfielder Lea Sanders (North Merrick, N.Y.) for another, 9-7 (14:11). O'Leary netted an unassisted goal, 9-8 (7:18), before freshman midfielder Julia Galantich (Clinton Corners, N.Y.) completed the Griffins uphill trek with the first of her career, 9-9 (5:32). Queens College regained the upper hand on a tally by Martello, 10-9 (3:26), but Sanders equalized 43 ticks later on a feed from O'Leary, 10-10 (2:43), setting up O'Leary's winning strike.

Leckonby paced Chestnut Hill College with a four-point effort (three goals and one assist) in her collegiate debut, and O'Leary finished with two goals in addition to an assist and a game-best five draw controls. Puhl recorded two ground balls and a caused turnover in the thrilling win.

O’Leary contributed six ground balls and seven draw controls to her impressive week, and Leckonby came up with two ground balls and two draw controls. All three players were honored on the CACC Weekly Report for the first time in their careers.
