Say Snags Honor Roll Award On CACC Men’s Tennis Weekly Report

New Haven, Conn. – (3/31/2015) – The Chestnut Hill College tennis teams traveled together twice last week, putting the newly established Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Rankings to the test. The Griffin men went 1-1 in the dual matches as they first defeated Queens College, 5-4, bringing Coach Stroble on win closer to 100 before coming up short at the University of the District of Columbia by the same final, 5-4. For his role in the performance, senior Steven Say (Cannes, France) was recognized with an Honor Roll mention.

While the women’s team suffered a 7-2 loss to the #33 Knights, the Chestnut Hill College (6-6) men took the upper hand on Queens College (5-3) after Say and, classmate, Michael Humes (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) gutted out a 9-8 (5) victory at number two doubles. Freshman Jonathan Ducretot (Antibes, France) and junior Henry Boyle (London, England) won the other point with their 8-6 win in the third team flight. Say, Ducretot, and Humes won the key singles matches to secure another Stroble victory; Say won number three singles (6-1, 6-1), Ducretot the fifth individual flight (6-4, 7-5) and Humes at number six (7-5, 6-3).

Two days later the Griffins took the courts at the University of the District of Columbia for a dual match against the Firebirds. The women captured their 11th win of the season with their 8-1 triumph over the hosts; meanwhile the men were defeated in a battle of regionally ranked squads, 5-4. The Griffin men hoped to follow in the women’s footsteps with bookend doubles wins at number three (8-3) and number one singles (9-8) earning the Griffins a 2-1 advantage heading to individual play. Say and Humes made up for the doubles loss with singles wins. Unfortunately, they were the only two Griffins to win their individual match, leaving the Firebirds to a 5-4 comeback victory. Say first extended the Griffin advantage to 3-1 with his 7-6, 6-3 win at number three singles. But after Firebird wins at number two (7-5, 6-4) and number one (6-4, 4-6, 6-1) singles, Humes returned the Griffins to the lead, 4-3, with his 6-3, 6-0 triumph at number six singles. Sadly, the lead was short-lived as the Firebirds stole the match with closing wins at number four (6-4, 6-3) and number five (6-3, 6-3) singles; 5-4.

The Chestnut Hill College women’s tennis team takes a break until they face Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) on Friday, April 3, while the men return to their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule on Tuesday, March 31 with an 11:00 a.m. match at Bloomfield College.
