Martines’ 3,000-meter at Blue Hen Classic Collects CACC Weekly Track Awards New Haven, Conn. – (4/28/2015) – Freshman
Giancarlo Martines (Cherry, N.J.) earned ten of the Chestnut Hill College men’s outdoor track and field team’s 94 points with a 1
st place (8:46.51) finish in the men’s 3,000-meter run. His performance garnered him his second appearance on the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Track and Field Weekly Report as he was simultaneously honored as the league’s Track Athlete and Rookie of the Week.
The men’s trophy went to Villanova University (141 points,) but Martines’ big run came at the end of the day as the men’s 3,000-meter served as the University of Delaware Classic’s concluding event. It would be a climatic end for the Griffins who earned a spot in the team standings, 3
rd of 9, for just the third time this season. The Griffins also earned five points in the shot put thanks to the rewarding tosses of freshman
Ukunoritse Eyeguokan (Owings Mills, Md.) (6
th, 10.21, 3 points) and senior
Michael Humes (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) (7
th, 9.26, 2 points). Freshman
Ediegeo Vanterpool (Clementon, N.J.) earned four more points with his 5
th place (4.97) finish in the men’s long jump while Eyeguokan added two points in the men’s 100-meter dash (7
th, 12.43) and four points in the men’s 200-meter dash (5
th, 25.15). In between, junior
Noel Hightower (Easton, Pa.) earned five points with his 4
th place (16.01) time in the men’s 110-meter hurdle. There were 14 points scored in the men’s 400-meter dash with junior
Manon Purnell (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Vanterpool placing 2
nd (54.92, 8 points) and 3
rd (55.03, 6 points), respectively, 11 points in the men’s 400-meter hurdle run that saw Hightower run 3
rd (59.02, 6 points) and Purnell right behind him in 4
th (1:01.34, 5 points), and eight points in the men’s 1,500-meter run with a 2
nd place (5:07.11) effort. Sophomore
Eric Barton (Colora, Md.) and junior
Daniel Repsik (Haddonfield, N.J.) joined Martines in scoring of the men’s 3,000-meter run, placing third (9:29.19, 6 points) and 4
th (9:59.48, 5 points), respectively. Eyeguokan and sophomore
Vraja Podlofsky (Port Royal, Pa.) also represented the Griffins in the final standings of the javelin throw, tossing the needle 27.36 (11
th) and 25.03 (12
th) meters, respectively.
The men’s and women’s track teams conclude their season with the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championships, which are scheduled for Sunday, May 3
rd, at Georgian Court University.
