Raia and Koehler Collect CACC Honor Roll Recognition

New Haven, Conn. - (5/4/2015) – Playing leading roles in Chestnut Hill College’s 6-4 triumph over Felician College in the opening round of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship Tournament, senior pitcher Dominic Raia III (Philadelphia, Pa.) and senior shortstop Preston Koehler (Bath, Pa.) were awarded Honor Roll mentions on this week’s CACC Weekly Report. Raia struck out a season-high tying 12 batters in a complete-game effort as the Griffins kept their season alive with Saturday’s playoff win; Koehler was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI in that game, part of a week in which he went 6-for-16 (.375) with a double, two RBI, and five runs scored.

With the 2015 CACC regular season behind them, Chestnut Hill College welcomed Philadelphia University to Latshaw-McCarthy Field for a late-afternoon contest on Tuesday. After some early fireworks the Griffins stayed hot against the Rams, making efficient use of 13 base hits, seven walks, and two hit batsman in a 12-4 victory. Freshman pitcher Andrew Sibson (Galloway, N.J.) stayed perfect (5-0) while junior first baseman Patrick Campion (Norristown, Pa.) and Koehler kept the table set with three hits apiece.

An opening error by the Ram second baseman served as the bad omen with singles from Campion and junior left fielder Joseph Monaghan  (Doylestown, Pa.) plating the first two Griffin tallies, 2-2. Successive singles from Koehler and sophomore center fielder Brandon DiBona (Southampton, Pa.) brought home the next two, 4-2, and a wild pitch the last, 5-2. The score held there for the next two innings with the Rams cutting the deficit to 5-3 before Koehler and senior third baseman Taylor Steen (New Egypt, N.J.) combined to plate three runs in the fourth, 8-3. A sacrifice fly from junior designated hitter Brendan Looby (Sewell, N.J.) added another Griffin run in the sixth inning, 9-4, and singles from sophomore third baseman Austin DiBonaventure (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) and junior left fielder Dalton Cozart (Commerce Twp., Mich.) in the eighth inning increased the final spread to eight runs, 12-4.

A late Chestnut Hill College rally fell just short as University of the Sciences (USciences) escaped Latshaw-McCarthy Field with a 7-6 triumph in Wednesday’s non-conference contest. Koehler offered a double and a run scored in the Griffins' final tune-up for the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship Tournament.

Four sixth-inning runs, three earned, against Raia was not enough for #6 Felician College to derail the #3 Griffins as Chestnut Hill College provided their ace with plenty of support in a 6-4 CACC Opening Round triumph. Raia struck out a dozen Golden Falcons while Looby, senior right fielder Michael McLaughlin (Philadelphia, Pa.), freshman first baseman Matthew Owens (Cherry Hill, N.J.), and Koehler plated the necessary five runs in the Griffins' first five at-bats against the Golden Falcons.

As Raia cruised through the Golden Falcon lineup the Griffins put runs on the scoreboard in the third, fourth, and fifth innings thanks to respective contributions from McLaughlin, Owens, and Koehler. Following a third-inning lead-off single from DiBona, a Craig sacrifice, a single from Steen, and a McLaughlin single advanced the Griffin advantage to 3-0. It turned 4-0 with a Owens sacrifice fly the brought home Koehler who led off the fourth-inning at-bat with a single up the middle and moved to third on a double down the left field line from junior catcher Robert Slagle III (Lafayette Hill, Pa.). Koehler ended up platting the Griffins' game-winning run on his fifth-inning, two-out single back through the box, 5-0.

Raia's only hiccup cam in the sixth inning, when the Golden Falcons threated with four runs on four hits, a walk, a wild pitch, and a Griffin error in right field, 5-4. But the Felician College rally was soon squashed as the Griffin ace closed the frame with a grounder to third base before retiring the next seven Golden Falcons in order. In the ninth, a one-out beaning of junior designated hitter Gerard De Filippo (East Hanover, N.J.) made things interesting in the visitor's final at-bat. He moved to second on a pinch-hit single from sophomore Sean Rogers (Kendall Park, N.J.), but no further as Raia went the distance, inducing the final two outs with a fly to left and a grounder back to the mound. Slagle and Koehler totaled two hits apiece while Owens knocked in two in just his sixth collegiate start. Raia (8-1) allowed three earned runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out 12 Golden Falcons in his program-record eighth win of the season.

Koehler drew a walk in the Griffins’ 6-2 setback at The United States Naval Academy (Navy) on Sunday, May 3.

Chestnut Hill College resumes CACC Championship Tournament action on Thursday, May 7, when the Griffins begin the double-elimination portion of the playoffs against second-seeded Post University. First pitch is slated for noon at Wilmington University's Jim Sherman Sr. Stadium (Wilson Field).
