Griffin Trio Garners Weekly CACC Honor Roll Mentions

New Haven, Conn. - (9/8/2015) – Chestnut Hill College concluded their Labor Day trip to Florida with a Sunday afternoon 3-2 victory over Oakland City University. The Griffins used a 25-9 shooting advantage to gain the upper hand and facilitate their first win of the season on a game-winning tick-tack-toe connection from sophomore forward Morgan Ruth (Blackwood, N.J.), freshman midfielder Brianna Ferrell (Newtown Square, Pa.), and sophomore forward Anna Abbot (Sicklerville, N.J.) (63:14). The effort landed Abbot, Ferrell, and senior goalkeeper Kayla Reno (Cantonsville, Md.) each a spot on the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Weekly Honor Roll.

Oakland City University (1-2) was first on the scoreboard, making use of their first shot which came just 2:37 into the contest, 1-0. Chestnut Hill College (1-1) woke up from the early strike and gradually gained control of the contest with a series of offensive strikes from senior midfielder Danielle Spinuzza (Williamstown, N.J.). She loosened up the Oaks’ defenses for Ruth, who delivered an unassisted tally just before the 11-minute mark (10:54), 1-1. The Griffin assault on the Oaks goal continued for the remainder of the opening half, but the next goal did not come until 48:19, when Abbot netted the first of her two scores on a ball through the box from Farrell, 2-1. Unfortunately, the Griffin advantage was short lived as sophomore defender Ashley Gallo (Cleveland, Tennessee) served sophomore midfielder Lauren Rapp (Evansville, Ind.) for a breakaway Oaks goal just 46 second later, 2-2 (49:05). With the game on the line the next 15 minutes got heated, with both sides launching attacks the opposing defenses. Eventually the Griffins escaped victorious with Ruth, Farrell, and Abbot supplying the game-winning tally a 63:14 as the defense clamped down, allowing only one shot on Reno the rest of the way. Reno totaled five saves in the victory (1-1).

Chestnut Hill College put their best foot forward in Friday, September 4, evening's season opener at Palm Beach Atlantic University, but the Sailfish netted a 5-0 victory on 42 shots. Ferrell, sophomore forward Rachel Gilborges (Philadelphia, Pa.), and sophomore forward Kylee Jazikoff (Brick, N.J.) each recorded a shot, but only Jazikoff put hers on goal for the Griffins.

The women’s soccer team returns north to visit The Lincoln University for a 4:00 p.m. contest on Wednesday, September 9.
