Apodaca Closes Season with Second Straight CACC Weekly Honor Roll Recognition

New Haven, Conn. – (4/26/2016) –
In the final week of the Chestnut Hill College Softball schedule, junior shortstop Corie Apodaca (Ontario Calif) was 5-for-9 (.556) with three runs-batted-in (RBI), earning herself a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Weekly Honor Roll mention for the second the second straight week. Apodaca had a hit in each of the two CACC games versus Nyack College before going 3-for-3 (1.000) in the second game opposite Pace University.

During senior day contest against Nyack College (9-39, 6-20), Chestnut Hill College (12-40, 9-17) got on the scoreboard first, scoring three second-inning runs on a pair of run-scoring singles from senior left fielder Nicole Carney (Ontario, Calif.) and senior catcher Megan Kehr (Exton, Pa.) a bases-loaded walk to junior Apodaca, 3-0. The Warriors cut into the Griffin advantage with a run in the top of the fourth inning, 3-1, but a lead-off walk to junior first baseman Jenna Long (North Wildwood, N.J.) and a Warrior error was the spark for three more Scarlet and Gold runs in the bottom of the frame, 6-1. With plenty of cushion, senior pitcher Kaitlyn Johnson (New Boston, N.H.) took her time retiring the Warriors, who scrapped together three more runs before the final out was secured, 6-4. She allowed four runs on eight hits and two walks for her sixth (6-13) win of the season.

Against Pace University, freshman catcher Brielle Riotte (Elizabeth, N.J.) broke up a game-one no-hit bid for junior Kaitlynn Nelson (Ojai, Calif.), who salvaged the shutout for the Setters in a 9-0, five-inning final. The Setters beat Chestnut Hill College in game two as well, this time taking the full seven to do so, 8-3.

Looking for revenge, Chestnut Hill College scored early in game one. Freshman right fielder Ariel Magee (North Cape May, N.J.) sent a 1-1 pitch to the right center wall for a one-out double in the first inning. It was followed by an Apodaca single and a run-scoring grounder to second off the bat of freshman second baseman Alex Sauer (New Milford, N.J.), 1-0. The Griffins added a second run in the third inning on a lead-off home run freshman third baseman Lily Winn (Los Angeles, Calif.), 2-0. But in the latter frames of the affair the Setters posted a pair of four-run innings to outweigh a fifth-inning RBI double from Apodaca, 8-3.

The Chestnut Hill College softball team finished the season at 12-42 overall and 9-17 in CACC play.
